Okay, another question from and Idiot.
I downloaded a copy of Medal of Honor 'allied assault'. It came as a .bin file..
now what? What do I have to do to open and install it? I had one copy, but it locks up when I install it...pisses me off.... |

Hey there,
A .bin file is part of a two file package, commonly known as bin/cues.
A cuesheet loads the binary image, which can be burnt onto a CD, or can be mounted virtually.
You will need the correct bin/cue combination to successfully burn the CD, as the cuesheet holds information about the length of the track, any time of MixedMode data, how it should be burnt, etc.
A bin is pretty useless without the cuesheet. Fortunately, cues can be created quite easily, if you have the bin in question.
Google for cuesheet makers, and you should be away in no time.

Bin/Cue files are just "image" files that CD Burning sofwares use to create a CD. With the right software all you would have to do is select the BIN file and click Burn! A lot of people suggest NERO, but since you're a self-proclaimed novice, I'd suggest MagicISO. You just click "write CD" at the top choose the BIN file and you're done! Remember we're not burning the BIN file itself, but the data contained in the BIN file as read by MagicISO.
Now, one problem with downloaded .bin files is that there are often problems with the file or it's not the right game. Download a prog called CDMage and have a look inside the file for corruption (it will fix it) and to ensure it's the right .bin before burning. Nothing worse than burning up a couple of CDs, plopping the CD1 in the drive and some crappy totally different game starts autorunning.

Burn the bin file using MagicISO after inspecting the file with CDMage. No .cue sheet necessary, unlike NERO.

You can convert the .bin to ISO using WinISO if you insist on NERO, but are unsure of a cuesheet. (guide):

Then burn the ISO using Nero (guide):

You could alternatively make a .cue file using the MakeCUE program:

You dont need the .cue file at all, just mount it with a virtual cdrom drive.
This is a great one:

You can mount just about anything with this, even DVD ISO's. (ISO, BIN, NRG, IMG and more.) |

Bear in mind that some installers recognize virtual drives and will refuse to install the game if one is found. I have had problems with virtual drives in the past, namely Daemon tools, and wouldn't recommend this course for a novice.
If you really must pursue this course, check here first.

Do a lot of reading before venturing into this area....it can be very treacherous. Of course Giant, it can go without a hitch. I am not belittling your imput, nor countering it totally. However, for a novice, this can go very wrong. Much easier to burn without a .cue sheet with Magiciso. |

Yes, I know what you mean, thats why I use CloneCD.It has a nice little feature that "hides" the fact that you have a CD-R mounted or in the drive. ANyway, regardless, I have a lot of experience with cracking games, and you usually just use a no cd patch to play the game with no cd in the actual drive, just do a full install. |
