Any Car Buffs? Why does it take two tries to start my Kia?

I know there could be myriad reasons, but how do I begin to figure out why it takes two times on a cold start(first time of the day), to start my 97 Kia Avella(standard transmission).
I know I could just take it to a mechanic and have them look at it but, I've never owned a car before and I'm curious.
Otherwise the car works great. It runs through the gears smoothly. The engine sounds fine. It doesn't eat up gas or oil.

It's got 80 thousand K on her.

Well....I don't know anything about that model, but I will try...

The carb is dry. If it has a manual choke, employ it. If not, 1 pump before starting sets the auto choke and gets some gas into the carb. If it's fuel-injected, don't pump it at all...you need to clean the fuel injectors. They sell gasoline additives to do this.

Replace the spark plugs. Dirty, old plugs can't fire well. The rotor cap and rotor, plugs and spark plug wires are all part of a standard tune up...easy to do with the right tools. PVC valve as well.

The last cause is obvious....it's a Kia. Wink

The only vehicle I've ever been in that had a choke besides my lawn mower was an 83 volvo station wagon my mom owned. I'm pretty sure the Kia's got fuel injection. Which might be the problem.

And Kia's are class. Superclass.
The avella was built around a Mazda engine. 1.3l. An amazing 66HP's of econo power.
When I go back to Canada I want to find a Ford Aspire(Which is the same car).

Yep....I guess that's why they went belly up and got bought out by Hyundai. Laughing

I didn't know that. I found a few pics the Aspire even has its name written in the same ugly pink as the Avella.

all naturally aspirated engines (engines with a carby) have a choke... all cars, all bikes, all chainsaws, etc...

99% chance it has nothing to do with fuel... check, clean, replace the electrics as demophobe suggested... plugs are cheap and wear quickly, start there

you could always sell it and buy a holden

Not to nitpick but this is entirely accurate. Cars without turbo-chargers or super-chargers are naturally aspirated and can have carburetors or fuel injection. Fuel injected engines don't have chokes. So you can have a naturally aspirated engine without a choke. However, all carbureted engines do have chokes.

To the OP: Did you post this question or write a review of this car mentioning this problem on any other sites? I am wondering because I found other mentions of this. For what it's worth, 6-cylinder Jeeps were famous for needing 2 trys to start even when there was nothing wrong with any of the components. That might be the case with your car as well. But I would follow some of the advice given above before you make any conclusions like that.
