|
|
Hello all,
I looked for this topic but it was no where to be found.
I finally bought a computer- After two years in Korean PC rooms. But as you would probably know it's in Korean. I want to be able to change the language on the desktop and in the dialog boxes- So that I know what is going on.
I've tried changing through the regional setting and the like, but it never changes the menu or the boxes.
I don't believe this should be so difficult. I've spent an entire morning on it now...
Anyone got any ideas? |

Yeah, what you're going to have to do is buy an english language copy of Windows XP and install that over top. There is no magic switch. Sorry. You should probably have asked at the point of purchase for XP in english. I bought a laptop at Technomart and they happily installed XP english and gave me the CDs.
Think of having only one regional language resident in the O/S as DVD regional settings. You can't sell XP in thailand for thai language speakers at the same price you sell it to North American english speakers. You might want to price it a tad cheaper for people who make $300 a month. Of course, if you slap an english language version on thai, korean, chinese, russian, etc install CDs, it's easy for people to buy cheaper versions of XP in, say, China and then sell them in North Amierca. |

Mindmetoo is right about that. Just be aware that if you have software installed on Windows that you don't have CD's for, you will likely not be able to run it after installing the English language version. |

The only way you can do what you want to do is if you have an MUI (multilingual user interface) version of Win XP which is seriously difficult to get hold of unless you have a corporate license or someone who has access to one
Unlike Mac, Windows realises the potential market value of NOT allowing people to change languages at the click of a mouse. Take your pick
If you have Office XP or 2003 though you can right click on menus and change their titles from Korean to English. I did this to help my wife with our Japanese OS on our laptop.
Another real drag with using IE as your browser is that you cannot install the English version over the Korean one without first uninstalling it. Doing that is such an effort you won't want to bother - which is exactly why they make it such an effort. The easy way is simply to wait for IE 7 or use Mozilla |

Since when do you need a key for corporate versions of MS software or O/S? |

That's wierd, maybe they've started doing it for Asian distribution. Or if you got it off bit torrent, maybe it's not actually a corporate version- wouldn't be the first time somebody has downloaded something different from what they were expecting. |
