When the car mechanic goes to work, they don't say, "Okay, I'm going to fix cars now." They say, "I'm going to work."

When the bus driver goes to work, they don't say, "I have to go and drive a bus." They say, "I have to go to work."

When the cashier goes to work, they don't say, "I'm going to check purchases all day." They say, "I'm going to work."

When the teacher goes to work, they don't say, "I have to go to work." They say, "I have to go and teach."

I think it's so bush.

Whenever I leave my comfy chair after the first bell rings, I always say, "Time to make the doughnuts."

You must be talking about teaching English at the Uni, because at the haggie no teacher struts around with a starched attitude about 'teaching'. If they did everybody would laugh. Heck, all the kids do is laugh and hack around AND study English. I say, 'I have to go to work'.

Ha! I say this before leaving the house in the morning ocassionally, and Wifey always looks at me like I'm nuttier than a fruitcake.

Not all of us only teach at work you know. I don't say "I have to go and teach." to my wife when I leave home of course but I do say it to people at work so they know what I'm up to.

Also, I heard a legend about a guy who claimed that teaching in Korea was not actually work but more like a distraction from his main job of getting smashed and laid every five minutes. In his case, "I have to go and teach" was his equivalent of "I have to take a dump." - something you do because you have to, not because you want to.

Two exceptions to the arrogance rule there then... Rolling Eyes

Hrm I always say to any online friend I'm chatting with "well, off to work!"

I think your post is sort of stupid, actually.

Thank you for your opinion.

It's something I noticed right from the start, right back in TESOL school. I thought others might relate to it, too.

I enjoy taking a dump. I plan my day around a good one.
And teaching is definitiely something I have to do and not something I want to do. Sometimes I think about not showing up for work, but I figure my boss was nice enough to fly me over here so I probably should make an appearance.

Made me laugh, too. My understanding is that it is a baseball term meaning amatuerish or unnecessarily pretentious, coming from minor leaguers who would come to the major leagues thinking they were the next Babe Ruth. The minor leagues are called the "Bush leagues" because you are playing in remote places, so tha behavior was called "bush league" or just "bush".

ha ha! george w. bush is so bush!

sorry, dumb joke. couldn't resist.

i say "i have to go teach now" only to my co-workers...and then we bust up laughing. sometimes, when i'm in a serious, face-value mood, i say "i have to go baby sit now." that's a more accurate description of what i do.

My father has taught for twenty-four years now. Before he graduated, he had a string of hard labor "roughneck" jobs. Chicken houses and construction shifts out in the desert. These days he doesn't say much when he goes to work. Just smiles and drinks his coffee. Whistles occasionally. Cleans his gun.
