Spyware Continues To Proliferate

Wed Aug 4, 5:00 PM ET
Gregg Keizer, TechWeb News

Spyware continues to plague computer users, according to figures released Wednesday by Internet provider EarthLink and anti-adware vendor Webroot.

Running software updates can help plug gaping security holes. Plus, preview the anticipated Windows Service Pack 2.

The companies' third joint SpyAudit report noted that although the incidence of spyware's most dangerous forms--systems monitors such as key loggers and trojans that can open the machine to hacker hijacking--dipped slightly from May to June, they nearly doubled from the first to the second quarters of 2004.

What's funnier is spyware is creating even odder spyware. Basically people un-aware of free legit programs like adaware and spybot are clicking on pop up ads for so-called free spyware detection programs. When you install these programs they do things like claim to find spyware that's not even resident on your computer. When you get all worried and click to remove it, you're asked to supply your credit card number for the full version. Uh huh. Worse, it will slap on its own spyware and home page hijackers.

I think adaware has started to remove these duplicitous spyware detectors.
