Does anyone have any suggestions for some good, easy novels for university students? Agatha Christie seems about the right level, but some students don't like mysteries. Any other suggestions about an author or titles would be appreciated. |

You could always hand them secondary ed. novel<las> (the ones used in language arts classes). I know these are for younger-than-univ. aged students, but with the gap in maturity (west V east), it may very well fit.
Dunno, never really thought of it.
Maybe this? http://www.litplans.com/
Maybe google "Teen Novels"
I am so sick right now and can't think straight (though, I rarely think straight in any form)...will put more thought into this later.

There are also adapted readers of classic literature. I found a bunch in the big bookstaore at the CoEx mall. My summer intensive class read "The Great Gatsby", which was nice-'n-watered down for their level. |

In the adult books section of Kim and Johnsons, they have several novels selected for things like this. Off hand, maybe something by Steinbeck or Mark Twain would be good? |

the censorship on this board is ridiculous.
who is responsible for these ridiculous rules? if someone is working and living in korea, it's fair to assume that person is an adult and can deal with profanity. frankly, there's enough hand-holding at my hagwon without having to deal with it on these boards.
i just wrote the surname of charlesdickens and it got 'beeped'. |

Where the Red Fern Grows is one I'm using. I have to reinforce the fact that a lot of the dialouge is colloquial, however. |

The Strange Life of Ivan Osokin.
P. D. Ouspensky
Quote: |
The subject of the book finds himself in a mid-life crisis, having, in his eyes, made mistakes at key points of his life which have cost him his happiness. By chance he meets a magician to whom he explains his woes. Osokin argues that things would be different if only he could have the same chances over again, and (with the benefit of foresight) he would be able to keep, instead of lose, his lifetime love. The magician sends him back to live his life again. Yet even with this foresight, and in full cognisance of what will ensue from his actions, he behaves, second time around, in exactly the same way (as the magician had warned him). The underlying current of the book is that we do not live life, but rather, that life lives us. It is worth considering our response to this assertion that all of our thoughts, feelings and actions are in fact, mechanical. |

Thanks for the advice! I found (on-line) some "graded readers" by Penguin and Oxford. I think these may be the ticket.
bibimbap I agree. Instead of telling us what is NOT acceptable, I think the mods should come up with a list of what IS acceptable! If I want to say "s**t" or "f***" there should be some "acceptable" way to do it. Mind you, I'm not saying that profanity should be used indiscriminatly (sp???), but sometimes, it IS the right word to use!
Geez...hijacking my own thread!!!! |
