okay...
the other day i was finally getting ready to do the first productive thing on my computer since i bought it. first i checked my email and i think i downloaded some sort of virus. oops.
anyway... a minute or two later, my monitor went black, with some sort of 'power saving device enabled. your monitor will shut down in a few seconds' message came on, and sure enough, my monitor shut down, followed immediately by my computer.
bummer. so i turned it back on, and after about a minute, the same thing happened. so i tried again and again and again... same results.
so on saturday i took it down to the guy i bought it from, who is much more computer savvy than myself, and it worked fine at his place. but he scanned it for viruses, and found a few. he deleted them all, along with a bunch of other trash i had on there that had been slowing me down.
but when i took it home yesterday, and tried to run it, the same thing happened after about five minutes. i don't know what's going on. has this happened to anyone else? what can i do about it? why did it work when i brought it to his place? the only variable that changed was that it was plugged into his monitor. but i don't see how a monitor would make any difference.
someone please offer me something in the way of advice. thanks! |

I'm not sure but here's a copy of a post post of mine giving you links to stuff that can help keep your pc free of crap and a site for help if no-one else here knows for sure.
____________________________________________________________
Don't forget to go to the help and info links. They should help you get rid of it. Search their forums or register and ask for help. There are other links on those sites for spyware scumware removal plus some reviews, hints and help for using the stuff and keeping crap off your pc. Good luck.
Free:
This link is to CNets' most popular downloads page. You'll see
AdAware, Zone Alarm, Mozilla Firefox, Spybot Search and Destroy
AdAware and Zone Alarm
Spybot Search and Destroy
Coolweb Shredder
note : the CWS author hasn't been updating as much lately.
HiJack This
Spyblaster
Spyware Guard
Not:
Window Washer
Scroll down and find Window Washer 5.1 on the right. DL it and open and read the .nfo file(s) with notepad. The rip is built into the program. Just install it. Run it every time you go off line.
Info and help sites:
Prevention article from cexx.org[url]
[url=http://forums.spywareinfo.com/]spywareinfo.com
cexx.org
This is a lot of stuff. You have to get into the properties for each one too. For instance Ad Aware has a setting to eliminate the reg entry for anything it finds. Ad Aware will disabel a lot of free stuff that come swith spyware and adware. Like free DivX and Download accelerator. I let it and learn to live with out that stuff.

maybe your modem/lan connection is causing the grief... if the thing works perfectly somewhere else then there are only a few other things to eliminate..
it is a pain in the butt when it works fine in front of the 'guru' but craps out at home..
can you call the guy to come to your joint? that would be my next step. |

Thanks Mathews-world. I'm more than happy to help out when I can.
You've inspired more advice from me for the poster.
The battery mode at home but not at the guru's sounds like you have a problem with your plug or wall outlet. Try another outlet. I had a wonky outlet here once but I de-selected all the power options so mine just turned off.
Right click select properties, the screen saver tab and then the Power button.
Check what options are selected.
I have
Power scheme 'always on'
Turn off monitor 'never'
Turn off hard disks 'never'
System standby 'never' |

hey dalton...
i like this advice much better. i hope this works, because to a technical retard like myself, your first response was a little bit intimidating. i really hope my problem is as simple as this. thanks for everything! i'll let you know how it turns out.... not that i expect any of you are on the edge of your seats waiting, but giving dalton a little badge of pride to wear is the least i can do. |
