Please don't be harsh. I know zip about computers etc.

Is there a program or whatever that I can check connection speed? I think I have adsl (I use Megapass, if that helps).

Plus how can I optimize my Kazaa Lite program to make full use of this speed. It takes me a a week just to download one movie.

Please be gentle on the comments.

Cheers.

Kazaa is your problem. Change over to BitTorrent for downloading big stuff like movies and games.

Suprnova is a good place to find movies, music, games and TV shows.

Not a program, but a website that will test your Bandwith speed:

http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/index.php

It used to be completely free, but now I think you're limited to testing 3 times a month. Should be enough for most. (I haven't checked mine in ages Embarassed ).

And I'd agree, BitTorrent is the way to go. Kazaa, I use for music, and only music. For anything else, BitTorrent is much faster.

You can also test your bandwidth speed for free here.
http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/bandwidth.asp

I also have MegaPass. I have the basic package I think which is around 3.4 megabytes a second download. That translates roughly into 400 Kilobytes (KiB) a second.
Kilobytes are what you see when you are downloading from Kazaa or BitTorrent or any other file online. So you should max out around 380 KiB/sec. if you are downloading something from a site that can handle large size uploads (download.com, microsoft.com etc...)
With BitTorrent I am happy when I can get around 30 KiB/second. I'm not sure how to make it faster as it's all P2P, and I don't expect the world. Wink
Anyway, sorry if I didn't help you understand how it works. I'm pretty much a novice with it all too.

PS. This is a handy site for converting bits to bytes and vice versa.

oops!

Industrial Strength,

Thanks...forgot about the PCPitstop test.

Oh, BTW, you need to fix your link...delete "url" at the end of it. (Your link brings up this page: http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/bandwidth.aspurl) Just a typo, I'm sure.

Thanks again,

Windows XP runs a primitive firewall. Basically it slows down bit torrent. See http://www.slyck.com/news.php?story=493

Basically you can set up the ports bit torrent uses to bypass XP's firewall (or you can shut down the firewall altogether).

Using this method I've gotten over 100kbs but it also seems to screw up my system. Everything works fine for a couple hours and then my whole freaking system freezes up. It's pretty nasty. You might have better luck.

Files that have large numbers of seeders (70) seem to generate the best speeds even without the port monkeying. If you see something like 2 seeders, you're going to be looking at long periods of 2 kbs downloads before it ramps up.

That link I supplied above, also follow the links at:

"1.1 How do I know if I have this problem?"

for bit torrent "kazza-like" clients. These clients make life much easier.

Thanks for the info mindmetoo. I'll check it out. I wouldn't mind getting higher download rates.

AND... get rid of Kazaa. Kazaa has too many security problems associated with it including viruses, spyware, and download tracking.

Move over to eDonkey, it's a better programme anyways. It also runs a Bit Torrrent plugin, making your life that much easier.

I checked it out, and made the recommended adjustments to the XP firewall and now I get downloads in excess of 100kB/s.
I also switched over to Azureus from BitTorrent. Like the way you can control the download and upload speeds for each file. So far, so good.
Thanks again mindmetoo.

If you double click on the file you're downloading you can see the individual files it's downloading (assuming you're downloading a "folder" of files). You can then set some of these files to not download (for example, you can avoid downloading jpgs included with music CD rips or ad html files). Also if you're downloading like "season 4 seinfeld", you can just download the two or three eps you want to see and not the full 4 gigs.
