The search function on this website is really susbstandard, especially when searching for multiple words. For example, just to test this out, I just tried to search for ice cream, and got 11,870 results, including words such as "novice", "advice", "peice" (sic), "nice", "service"... you get the idea. Neither were any of the patial "ice" words actually highlighted. (That really might be a good thing, but how do I know on which thread/page the words I'm really searching for actually appear?).
I then tried ice and cream for a result of 364 matches, including all the aforementioned words and more. There actually were a few threads that DID contain the (now highlighted) words ice cream, but who wants to scroll through 364 threads which comprise, in some cases, 4, 10, even 20 or more pages just to find what you're looking for?
Try searching for "ice cream" (quotes included), and among the 11 matches you will get the following link, but the words don't actually appear anywhere in the thread!
http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=11404
(You will find words like advice and "scream", though...)
In the same search, you will find this thread - the words ice cream do appear on page 2, but are not highlighted:

Isn't there a way to get results more easily? For example, if the word(s) you're searching for appear on page 9 of a thread, why can't page 9 be highlighted in some way? And if you want to search for a specific phrase, isn't there a way to filter out all the extraneous crap that gets in the way? If I want to find the exact phrase "best ice cream in Seoul", how can I filter out all the times that the words "best", et al, appear on their own?
(By the way, I just tried a search for best and ice and cream and in and Seoul and gave the search engine a conniption...)
There oughta be a big, bold
GOOD LUCK, FOLKS
on the top of the search page.
....and that's my rant for the day. Now, I'm off to the nearest Haagen Dazs for some lemon sorbet. |

See at the bottom of the page where it says "powered by phpBB"?
It's a link to the place where this forum comes from. Sperling & Co. can adjust a few settings but things like the inadequacy of the search function need to be fixed at the source, by the phpBB guys. |

Probably the same company that made the profanity filter.
I love it when cocker spaniel, Dick Cheney, and other non-offensive words get censored. |

You have to include "and" that's your problem. Search for "ice and cream" and youll get better results. I've never had a problem with it.
OK, I just read you tried that and I guess I'm just a monkey. |
