I have a XP machine with a 80 gig drive and I'm thinking of getting a PowerBook. What is the best way to transfer all the many files onto the PowerBook? If I mod the drive into an external, is it a easy plug and play or does it get more complicated because of difference in OS and format? Thanks

I got the "move2mac" software that transfers all your stuff over a USB cable. It worked for my documents and pictures, but not for my music. As far as Plug & Play stuff, macs are awesome for that. In all likelihood once you transfer your files to an external disk, you could plug that disk into your mac and it will automatically show the drive on your desktop, and you'll be in business.

Could I just put my hard drive into an external casing and just hook it up to the mac and the drive will show up on the desktop? Will there be format/OS compatibility problems?

I do believe that would work, but I've never heard of it being done so I couldn't say for sure. I can tell you that obviously PC programs (.exe files) will not work even if your pc drive IS mounted on the desktop, but you will be able to open docs and excel sheets (if you have office for mac, which I recommend), pdfs, picture files, mp3's and most other media files.

If it helps, I bought an ipod on ebay which turned out to be formatted for use with a PC. It took me a few weeks to figure out how to reformat it, and during that time it worked fine as an external hard drive on my mac, even though it was supposed to be for a PC.

You could of course get a cross over lan cable, and install "Appletalk" as a network protocol on your PC. That way you can transfer via LAN.
