Hello anyone and everyone in Daejon. I just got in two days ago (first time in Korea) and am feeling quite isolated. I don't want to bombard my co-workers with requests to "hang-out" or "show me around" because they seem pretty busy. Or maybe I seem like I don't need it. I don't know. Anyway, if anyone out there has a spare evening any day this week or next week or the week after that, my social calender is quite open. I would love to learn anything about this city. Where can I get a guitar string? How do I get to the mountains to go hiking? Is there a pool anywhere? What's with that roller coaster I see in the distance? I am not really "kooky" at all. I swear!

If you don't know about it already http://www.daejeonweb.com/ has a lot of information about Daejeon.
If your looking for westerners then the bar 'J Rock' is the place to go. It's very close to the 'downtown' Galleria Dept. Store (the one located in eunheng-dong. There are two Galleria dept. stores, so be a little careful with that)
As for not wanting to 'bother' your co workers, it does sound like you need their help. We all want to be independent and not risk bothering people, but in actual fact they'd probably be more than happy to help you out whilst your new to the place and you may even make some friends.
Independence is great but knowing when to ask for help is good too.
Other foreigners will be able to help you a lot with some things, but making some korean friends will really help you get to know the place and generally help you enjoy your time in korea.
Cheers and enjoy Korea |

I liked Daejeon. They were more courteous, relaxed and polite. It was quite refreshing. |

When I was in Daejeon 2 years ago, I used to go on mini adventures by myself.
Hop on a bus and take it all the way around in a complete circle. Note all the interesting stops along the way and next time you have a new place to explore.
Damn...I'm weird |

Go say hello to Jimmy Lee at the Palomino for me! Bring your guitar along. He's one cool folk singer! We used to have a live jam back in '97 every Sat. night. Those were careless days...
The Watermellon Sugar was another great hangout~ way back.

Hey Kooky,
Gyeryongsan is a really easy and beautiful hike very close to Daejeon, ask your Korean coworkers to tell you how to get there, and offer to have them come along. Even if they dont wanna come, as a foreigner hiking in Korea alone, you will undoubtfully meet up with friendly locals while hiking. When I went hiking in Korea alone, it was much harder to stay alone than it was to meet other people...
If the "old guys" at your new school are too busy to show the "new girl" around, then they are probabloy not gonna be all that cool in the long run. I hate it when foreign teachers dont take the time to help out new recruits, it symbolizes a complete lack of community... Do what you can to get involved in local culture. Have fun in Seoul this weekend... oops, did I say that.
New York misses you.

Korea has somewhat of a space agency, which happens to be located there. Not sure if you're interested in that, but that's where I might go. I think you might have stumbled upon there two years too early, as the subway isn't complete yet. I think it might be a lot nicer there after all the construction. When I went down there for a day it took me an hour to get from one part of the city to another on the bus, and was more packed than any other bus I've ever been on.
Although you are lucky to have gone there after the KTX was built, and Seoul is much closer than it was before. Plus the station itself is much nicer. Had you been there two years before it would have taken over an hour to rickety old Seoul Station, but it's really well done now. |

Mashimaro... agreed.
Daejeon is near some cool national parks though, Gyeryongsan and Songnisan (with Beopjusa temple and the big Buddha) are both excellent day trips. If you are near Songnisan, than you should also be fairly close to Danyang, which has very cool caves to explore as well... Danyang is a really nice place to spend a couple of days.

They ARE downright hot. It's a wonder I didn't jump my friends when I had the chance. |
