I was about to leave work today when the supervisor pulls me aside dor a chat "oh dear what have I done wrong now".
"I've been told to tell you that you have a new class as of next month", "oh" says I "who?", "Its adults, somewhere else, in the mornings" the alarm bells started to ring at this point "what time in the morning?" "well the class starts at 7am but you'll get picked up at 6.15am", I had to fight not to laugh out loud at this crazed idea. Now I have let a lot of things slide in my short hogwon career but having a triple split shift, at two locations spread between 6.15am and 7.30pm really does take the piss, to the point where I'm pretty sure my resignation is going to go in on Monday. Does anyone have any advice about the best ways to go about this, is it worth contacting the labour board or is it simply a case of pick my sunny low cost holiday resort till my remaining 6 months are up, either that or I hear Japan is nice this time of year, shame I missed the recruiting season..............

Just tell them you can't do it. I worked split shifts for 2 years and it wasn't a big problem for me. But a few of the other teachers had problems with it and complained to the director. She made a few changes to the schedule to accomodate them.
There is no need to quit your job over this. Simply tell them you can't do it. If they strong arm, tell them it is illegal to teach at a different place. |

| Just to reiterate what has already been plainly stated, your viso sponsorship can only be done for a single location. If you are working in two places, it's not legal. If you have to, tell them that you know this is the case. Though, I have to say, this isn't going to make your plight much improved! |

If I remember right, you're the guy who isn't getting paid overtime either, right? That combined with a crappy schedule-still might not be enough for the labor board. From what I remember, they couldn't seem to help until you're actually out of a job.
If you're really going to quit, but you want to work at another job here, you 'll need the release letter from your school, and they might not want to give that up. Check how much tax you pay, cause it sounds like your director is the sort for "creative" accounting, then threaten to go to the tax office, if you don't get a release letter. |

learn to say no
No I will not work any other shifts.
No I will not work elsewhere.
Dont let them order you around. Remember they need you alot more than you need them. My advice is if you are going to leave, wait until payday and then just do a midnight run.
Notice is for people who want to get ripped off |

| Nah I was getting paid for my overtime thankfully...... We finally got everything sorted and this past month I finally felt pretty settled and was looking forward to finishing up my contract, then bam this one comes out of the blue. There is pretty much no way I'm working this one, so we shall see what happens, I figure I'll put my foot down, get given the worst schedule ever till they find a replacement then quietly let go on some trumped up charge. All I'm hoping for is some way to get a release so that I can take a new job. Oh well as I say I hear Thailand is nice this time of year........ |

It could be that they are hoping you'll bail so that they can save the final contract payout........
Or not, you never know. |

It's illegal.
Tell him that.
Don't do it!
If you're caught, it's your butt. |

| Just say no as many times as you have to. Tell him why. Say no about a few other things too just for the hell of it. Stay cool, reasonable and firm, don't get angry. It seems to drive them nuts IMHExperience. Like I tell my students when I give them a bit of free time- no fighting, no killing. |

yeah, I have no intention of getting angry, I've pretty much started making alternative plans, my supervisor managed to slope off halfway through today so I didn't get chance to say no to her but I've expressed my displeasure at tyhe idea to the owner and we are going to have a sitdown meeting on Monday which could be fun.......... . I particularly like the looks of fear on other staff memebers faces when I told them I was refusing to do it as this poisonned chalice will probably get passed on to them, in the words of the grange hill gang "Just say no, NO!"......... I'll keep you posted.

If they're sort of avoiding you then they probably know you're going to turn them down. I suspect they prefer compliance not a 'nice try' from their foreigners. |

I know how you feel. I guess we foreign teachers get in a tizzy over such requests because we do spend the working day aiming to please, keeping the atmosphere congenial, while living in the apartment rented by the boss and concerned about not getting the boot. To sit out the remainder of the contract period in Thailand in a beach bungalow for four months as if it's 'Gilligan's Island'. I'd just politely and reasonably say no, no thank you. They'll step back a bit after that 'first round' and figure whether it's worth making a scene about it, or just hiring either another foreigner or a Korean teacher to do it. Expect them to be in a pouty sulk for a month or two, as if you'd just killed and eaten their dog. That done everything will be back to normal, and you won't be exhausted. Exhausted people make mistakes. Some scene in class down the road over some student(s) really pissing one off who wouldn't otherwise. Some 'herculean' schedule for a month, ok(Summer intensive, for example, 12 classes a day teaching ten hours a day for three weeks, which we just finished here). But just because one happens to be around? Nah. They can find someone else for that terribly important morning class, and the foreign teacher can get the average alloted amount of sleep as stipulated in the Geneva Convention (is your boss Colonel Klink?). |

| Don't do it. You're giving them ammunition when the shit hits the fan at the labour board. If you don't do it they've got nothing to hold over your head in terms of illegal activities. |

OK well I just said no. Went down like a warm cup of kimchi vomit, I wait to see what the end result is. I think I'm going to get fired later today and you know what it feels FANTASTIC. Now I'm playing for my months notice and/or my release letters.
Let the Games Begin!

Well we had the meeting. we started off with 'you said you'd do it', went onto 'we'd really like you to do it', through 'its a great opportunity' towards, 'business is bad we need you to' and finally 'we think you're a bad teacher so we want you to teach this one because maybe you'll do better at it'. I just sat there and tried to think of as many homonyms for NO WAY!!!! as possible. Apparently working elsewhere is perfectly legal and besides the ownerhas the power to deal with any legal issues that might arise...... Anyhow we shall have another meeting to 'dicuss my future' at some undefined time in the future, Guess I'd better get my bags packed then..........
Anyone got a job going
