Hi,
My boss has asked me to teach a conversation class to some 8 year olds with a very limited vocabulary. Other than rote drills, which will be boring for all concerned, I have no idea what to do.
I sure would appreaciate some helpful suggestions.
Thanks,

Well, it depends on what is meant by "conversation", and exactly how limited their vocab is, but you can start by teaching simple phrases like "how old are you?" "i am 8 years old", "what's your name" etc. and also teach them how to answer questions like "what was the worst subject at school today?" "the best subject?" "do you have brothers and sisters?" etc.
You can also get out a book or flashcards and ask them "do you have a dog? do you have a cat? do you have a sled? do you have a pig?" Once you get them to laugh and loosen up, it could turn out that they know more words than you think. And if you introduce the new words slowly, they'll pick up on them and in a few weeks they'll be much better equipped to hold something resembling a conversation. |

Unless they've gone to a hagwon for a while, they won't know much beyond "what's your name?" and "how old are you?. My advice, use lots of flashcards, games and songs for the first little while. I really like www.kididdles.com for songs. |
