Apparently the beer renaissance is finally happening here (about 15 years later than the states, what else is new). Here in Seoul, a handful of brewpubs have opened, and more bars are serving a variety of international beer.

But I miss brewing. Anyone know where I can pick up/order some supplies? I brew wine as well.

cheers,
MTK

p.s. "Mr. Beer" kits DO NOT qualify as homebrew equip. YUCK!!

I remember seeing a link to a home-brew club here in Seoul (a bbs, not unlike this, but in Korean), from a homebrew site in the States a while back.

Google is your friend - try a few keyword combos, and you're sure to track it down. Then all you need is a Korean friend to translate...

Yes- I was about to start a homebrew thread- what supplies are available in Korea?

I am leaving Australia in a week or so and can bring some hops and yeast, but malt syrup is way too heavy- has anyone found it there? I don't want to, actually won't, substitute rice syup. I have found barley there, and will figure out a way to roast it.

I would love the exchange recipes and ideas with other brewers there. Some things may need to be improvised- such as large carboys for brewing, cappers, etc.

Oh, and, minor point, is homebrewing legal in Korea? I am dying for excellent and cheap homebrew- good deep stout, dry hopped ale, etc.. I would love to get started.

Ahem. The site I mentioned was here, linked from here.

Looks like it's down, but my Korean's not good enough to figure out what the page says now.

They're having a get-together in Pusan for a few days at the end of the month.

Brewing in Korea has just recently been made legal. You can also sell what you brew if you pay tax on it of course.

wow! time to quit my day job!

ironically, i think it will be easier to all-grain brew here rather than doing extracts (that is, if you/we can find a place to roast/crack grain). perhaps i will venture down to one of the new brewpubs in gangnam and ask those folks where they order their grain from (i doubt they use korean grain...but then again). hops are easy enough to order from the states/canada and aren't prohibitively heavy, dido on the yeast (although freshness would be a factor, particularly for liquid yeasts). when the "blue beer lab" was still extant they stocked liquid yeast, but it was way, way out of date. Crying or Very sad

we used to stock awesome wine kits from california (not the canned garbage, mind you) at our shop in austin. i made some unbelievable merlots/cabernets/zins/combos with them. wonder how much those would cost to ship via ground?

i've seen carboys here (5 gal.), so no worries about shipping those behemoths...

I have only made ale with malt syrup, and with the addition of roasted grain for flavor. I'll have to figure out how to use whole grain only. Any advice? I used to get Zymergy in the States years ago, but I sure don't have them now, in Korea. I suspect that there are good websites with directions.

I'm in Daegu, which limits my access to some things. I'll bring yeast back from Australia, ditto hops. The yeast can be perpetuated by using brewed ale as a starter- but carefully. I think that if I am here next summer I may even try to grow some hops, but it is probably too wet in Korea for them to grow well.

If you come up with some Korea solutions please let me know. I am looking forward to going to sleep this fall to the blup blup blup of beer brewing.

I realize I'm a little late in the thread here but if anyone is still interested in homebrewing, there are many mailorder places that ship fresh ingredients. I use whole grian or dry malt extract to save on wait. Your right malt syrup is way too heavy. Theres a place in Seoul called Mr Beer that has stuff, but its old and was shipped from abrod and the costs are of course passed on to you. I buy bottlec caps from the guy. I'll wait to see if there is still anyone interested in this before I go on

I'm interested. I think it's best to bulk order grain from Korean companies (or China). Thing is, I don't have the slightest idea how. Hops aren't a problem, as we can get them shipped from the U.S. in vacuum packs. I used to work at a homebrew shop and we shipped liquid yeast all over the world and rarely received complaints. However, in the summer it would certainly be a wash. The storage areas on jets are baking hot.

I'd brew with DME, but I'd want to ship at least a couple of 25Lb. bags (or larger). I usually use about 7 or 8 lbs. per 5 gal. batch. Have you found DME here?

Hey folks,

Have not posted in a bit, but this was something besides theology that I think is really important.

You can get most of what you need to brew beer at the above website. I have not used them, but a buddy of mine has and he is pleased.

Cheers!

Excellent. Finally found a place with semi-reasonable prices on the peninsula!
