There are much dumber ones out there, but I know one officetel called
'Honor's Vill' lord knows who Honor is or what she is doing with a 'vill'.
Seems all you need do is come up with some word with warm fuzzy connotations, slap the word vill or plaza on it and bob's your half cut ajosshi.
Where did the pull the name 'Officetel' from anyway? It's a cross between an office and a 'tel'?
while I'm at it. Sign no. 101 you've been in korea too long: You've grown so used to the goofy building names they seem normal.
One poor woman looked mortified when I laughed at the name of her funky new 'tel'. |

I used to live in a place called "Suh-wee-tuh Pah-lah-suh." Funny... I always thought palaces were spacious!! |

I heard about a friends student experience at the scholarship office at an Ivy League Uni:
Scholarship guy: You should be ashamed of yourself applying for scholarships like this!
Korean: Why?
SG: Why does a rich guy like you want scholarships?
Korean: What????
SG: According to this you live in Lotte Palace. |

The place across the street from me is called "Sweet Home". I hate it because it's the first thing I see when I leave the building, so I wind up humming that stupid "Sweet Home Alabama" song all the way to work.
Oh damn.. now it's in my head again. It's even worse when you don't know the words, I wind up using the words from "Big Old Jet Airliner". |

Sweet Home Alabama
original lyrics written by Lynyrd Skynyrd
http://www.hereinmyhead.com/collect/originals/alabama.html
big wheels keep on turning
carry me home to see my kin
singing songs about the southland
i miss ole 'bamy once again and i think it's a sin
well, i heard mister young sing about her
well, i heard ole neil put her down
well, i hope neil young will remember
a southern man don't need him around anyhow
sweet home alabama where the skies are so blue
sweet home alabama, lord, i'm coming home to you
in birmingham they love the gov'nor
now we all did what we could do
now watergate does not bother me
does your conscience bother you, tell the truth
sweet home alabama where the skies are so blue
sweet home alabama, lord, i'm coming home to you
now muscle shoals has got the swampers
and they've been known to pick a song or two
lord, they get me off so much
they pick me up when i'm feeling blue, now how about you
sweet home alabama where the skies are so blue
sweet home alabama, lord, i'm coming home to you
sweet home alabama where the skies are so blue
sweet home alabama, lord, i'm coming home to you |

"now muscle shoals has got the swampers" ?!
Now I know how Koreans feel when presented with some dialog before they've been taught the vocab. |

If that's a DVD bang, it might just be some honest advertising. |

I think about this every time I drive past the "We've" apartments.
Often I wonder about pub (sorry, ho-puh) names. Like, why do they decide to name it the " ȣ" for the "Monkey Bar?" As in, why use the english word, in hangeul, and not just the Korean word for 'monkey?'
(That's just an example...maybe there isn't even a Monkey bar....I see examples like this all the time but now when I need one I'm blank.....argh)! |
