I don't know if this is in your budget range, but it's a great place - brand new, clean, they speak english, etc.

Uno House is great. Y1650 a night. A mildly crusty place with a funky atmosphere. Recommended.

Or, if you really wanna splash out, Toji-an Guesthouse is Y2000, but offers free beer & toast. Otherwise, it borders on the very crusty side. (and the 'shower'... hrrrrghhhhh.... the shower....)

Hehe, what a trippy place that is.. I felt like I was walking into the 70s. I loved the free beer & chocolates though..

Look under Lonely planets website theres a cheap hostel close to Kyoto in Osaka, 60000 yen for three nights. I think his name is Oliver. Guy is pretty cool, except when a guy skipped out without paying in full, then I hear he lost it on a girl I was with, the guy was with me we all got sloshed at a bar and couldnt make it back to the hostel and we had a early flight out, but none the less the price was right, he got paid eventually. We went to kyoto only about an hour and a half from there.

Thanks for your helpful replies, I'm now staying at the K House (as recommended by Sejong) - and very nice it is too.

Cheers.

There are also several cheaper Ryokan style places to the north east of the train station. (about 20 minute walk)

Try JHoppers near the train station. It's a hostel with a really cool, English speaking owner. It's also near a few different bus lines so it's easy to get around the city. I don't remember what I paid when I was there last Chusok, but I think it was about 25,000 won a night (2500 yen??). Also, get yourself a Kansai pass for the trains and buses. Its about 50,000 won for 3 days, but its worth it.

I had been to Kyoto and its neighboring cities (Osaka, Nara, Kobe) in Nov.03. I stayed all my way in Budget Inn. It is a newly refurbished inn. Walking distance to Kyoto Train station. Very clean. Internet available. No curfew. Reasonable price. English OK. There is a cheaper alternative in Tour Club. Both run by the same operator.

Among the 4 cities, Kyoto is th best place to visit. Many Japanese gardens, shrines, temples, traditional architecture and culture, tranquility instead of hustle and bustle. Osaka is just a big metropolitan that will make you hectic. But Osaka is still worth to visit (The giant specialized departments stores! Surely you can see something cool.) Nara is smaller than and similar to Kyoto. Kobe is a westernized harbor city.
