Got any good riddles to use in class? Most students I have now seem to like them.

A few I have used:

What goes up but does not come down?

What gets bigger the more you take away from it?

A man rides into town on Friday, stays 3 days, and leaves on Friday. How?

How can half of 12 equal 7..?

And some others I found on the internet.

How old are your students? I have a few puzzles that are good for getting middle-school students talking.

here are 3 big ones... prolly only good for more advanced classes tho...

1. What is my job?
I leave home and travel in a straight line. I turn left and go in a straight line again. I turn left and go straight once more. I turn left a final time and come back home.
---> have the kiddies ask you questions about jobs... ie. do you make a lot of money?, do you wear a uniform?, what day do you work? do you use tools?
---> answer... baseball player

2. A boy lives on the 20th floor of an apartment building. Every day, he hurries home from school to watch his favorite TV program. If it is a sunny day, he takes the elevator to the 4th floor and then walks the rest of the way up the stairs to his apartment. If it is raining, he goes directly to the 20th floor. He is really shy, and he doesn't know anyone else in the building. ---> Why does he take the elevator to the 4th floor if it is sunny outside?
--> answer...he is too short to press the '20' button, so on rainy days, he uses his umbrella to press the button.

3. Two identical twins go into a cafe and order a soda. Its a hot day and they want to cool off. The bartender makes two identical drinks for the twins. The first twin drinks his soda rather slowly, as he watches some TV. The second twin downs his soda in one big gulp. A few minutes later, the first twin drops dead. Why? They were both perfectly healthy and identical in every way. The two drinks were also identical.
--->answer...there was poison in the ice, the slow drinker allowed time for his ice to melt into the drink

these will work best if you can encourage some questions and have the students hunt for an answer

I like to draw Rebus puzzles on the board and let the kids figure them out.

There's a couple good collections here:

http://www.niehs.nih.gov/kids/braintpics.htm
http://www.fun-with-words.com/rebus_puzzles.html

Many of them are idioms that the kids might not be able to figure out but many others are prety straightforward.

Here is a collection of riddles which I have accumulated over the
last couple of years.

The number for each riddle refers to the word frequency number of the
least common word in the riddle, according to the word frequency
chart compiled by Yonsei University.

I did some 'no arms and no legs' jokes with some of my adults, when I was out drinking with them. Took to long to explain and the humor effect was lost. And I don't think that they are into morbid jokes.
