How about a 50% option? I officially save exactly half my pay but then I don't end up spending everything I budget for food/entertainment/etc. In my Excel spreadsheet, the portion I budget for living expenses/entertainment don't spend I draw off into another item that totals the monthly budget surplus to pay for an eventual holiday trip.

1st. year :10%
2nd. year:30%
This year:65%(so far but a big holiday is coming up)

The longer you are here i find the more you will save. You get a bit sick of putting all your money on down on booze all the time and once you've travelled around Asia and Korea a bit I suppose you start looking at more long term goals.

I cannot believe the people who save 90% unless they are making some money on the side.

Between 60-70%.

Then again we both work. We travel 1-2 times per year and do not live on the cheap at all.

Still, my first year I saved about 50% while paying off my loan.

I'm trying to aim for 75%, but dumb crap always bumps it down lower. I'm realistically expecting to bank 60% this month. I do consider money going towards loans as "saved", however. I just make the regular monthly payments on those.

first year my goal was saving 1 million/month out of a 1.75 million/month salary. Second year was saving $1,000/month when I made 1.9 million/month. Reached both goals happy to say.

Saving up money in Korea is too easy and makes it tempting to go back again. I keep on having to remind myself hogwons suck and its a job leading to nowhere beyond ESL.

We save about 65%, but if we decide we need a holiday, that brings it back a little. Smile
