Hello anyone know anything about the Kangnam Daechidong area, I am looking into a job in the area and was wondering if anyone had the low down. I dont know the name of the school yet, should soon. Just any general info would be good (whats nearby, is it dirty, alot of expats....). Thanks!
PS- I tried doing a search and came up with 1000 responses, and whenever I try to narrow the search nothing show up!

I lived in Daechi-dong and liked it a lot. It's one of the most affluent areas in Seoul (up there with Apkujeong), and the prime example of the ridiculous real-estate inflation in Kangnam. It's also a hub of some of the best hagwons in Seoul. In fact, one of the reasons housing is so expensive there is that the yuppie families are clamoring to move there to be close to the hagwons.
So to answer your questions, it's just a short bus ride to Kangnam station (I was also a 15-minute walk from the COEX mall), there's no nightlife but there are fast food joints, Starbucks etc. It's got a clean, burby feel to it, and because of all the hagwons you should see plenty of whities walking around. Also, the hagwon you're looking at will probably put you in a nice 1,000,000 won/month studio, instead of the rundown ddong-holes most teachers here are subjected to.
As an added bonus you'll probably score some extra points with the K-girls (the shallow ones) when you tell them you live in Daechi-dong. |

Thanks for the reply, sounds like a pretty nice place. So I take it the pollution isnt that bad there? Is the nightlife boring, or is it at least close to somewhere thats hopping? THanks again.

You're in Seoul; the pollution is pretty bad everywhere, just not as bad in Daechi-dong. You won't, for example, have to dance around pools of vomit like you would in say Itaewon or Shinchon.
As for nightlife, again, you're in Seoul; all the hotspots are just a taxi ride away. The closest is the area around Kangnam station, then Apkujeong; the areas with the highest concentration of good-looking women in Korea, imo.
I don't know what you're into, but I suspect you'd be happy with the area. If I were you I'd be more concerned about the working conditions at the hagwon itself. |

I'm living in Daechi Dong. I think it's a pretty good location. I've heard it referred to as the "Korean Beverly Hills" but that's pretty relative because I find the quality of on place to the next tends not to vary all that much. It looks cleaner than other parts of Seoul but you're still breathing the same air and it ain't clean! |

Daechi is pretty residential, but you're in kangnam so you're never more than 20 minutes from most anything you want. But if you want to be walking, or stumbling as the case may be, from many clubs/bars/restaurants, then you might want to go to Kangnam station or Apgujang.
depends on what you're looking for.
Daechi is famous for having tons of hagwons. |
