Hi there!
This is Pyonghwa with the latest update of events regarding my severance pay problem.Today I managed to get only a part of my severance for 3 years of work. I was supposed to get W6,500,000 including my last month pay but I got only W4,600,000 and it was paid by my former director in the presense of the officer and his boss at Labor Office. There was no other way to get the total. The whole process of recovering the money took 3 months as a whole with daily visits to Labor office and endless talks with my former director who used to *beep* around the bush unwilling to pay. Now I am going to turn to a lawyer who helped many teachers here but I will need to pay for his service. I can't stay in Pusan for a long time because of my husband's perspective job in another country, so we are going to leave and entrust the whole recovery in our friend here.
Dear teachers,
My hapless experience proved that if you sign your contract, please mention the fact that you want to get your severance pay at the end of it before you renew it. DON"T put it off like I did believing that after my 3 years of work I will have the total. THEY WILL NEVER PAY YOU!!! In case you are in big trouble with your severance or you didn't get paid or your pay was delayed, please contact the following people who helped me here in Pusan. It was very hard to find them, so you can use my experience and mention the ''case with Canadian teacher'' who was in trouble and they will help you.
1. Pusan Labor Office. City Hall.Investigations.
Mr. Han Yon Sun. (051)-851-7410.
Unfortunately, he doesn't speak English, so you will have to bring your friend. This officer is very helpful and can dig deep into your case.
2. In case you are not very happy with his service ( if the investigation takes a long time and the compromise is not reached) don't hesitate to ask him TO SEE HIS SUPERVISOR. I did it and his boss helped the things move much faster. Besides, his daughter is in Italy studying music, so he apologized for he was sorry that the foreigners need to go thru this hell here in Korea.
3. DON"T TURN TO Mr. Joseph Kim, who helps migrant workers. He is of no use for he refused to go to the court with me and made things even worse .
4.Mr.Scott Chung. Pusan Law Offices
(051)-463-7801 e-mail: [email protected]
His office is close to Pusan Immigration Office.
If you decide to use his service, ask about cost upfront.
He helped many teachers and he is my next step.
Please, remember when you deal with such problems try to stay calm but be persistent and stubborn like I did in my case. They often think that foreigners are very soft hearted and don't want to push the things but it's YOUR money, you need to get it, so try your very best but don't lose your temper.
One more thing: before your case goes to Investigations, you will first need to go to the Inquiries which is right opposite from Investigations. They will listen to your problem and fill in the paper which will go to Investigations in case they won't reach a compromise with your boss by calling him/her. According to Korean Law, it should take 14 days.
If you have any more questions, please send PM.[/b]

The Ministry Of Labour now has a phone number foreigners can call, thanks to Paperbag Princess for the heads up on this contact number:
