I've missed the bus!

I'm on campus at P.N.U., and I need the street name translated so I can take a taxi home. The street is...

Yeonsang9-Dong, Yeonje-Gu

If anybody can translate this into Korean so I can show a taxi driver, I'd really appreciate it!

Wouldn't it be easier to ask somebody at the Uni, even a security guard. Smile

Thanks for not much help at all.

I could, but look how fast you replied! If someone replied that fast with a translation, I'd be home in no time.

I'm in a PCbang anyways, so I think it's worth a shot.

I would, but I don't have Korean typing abilities on this computer, sorry. Can't you just read it to the driver? Better yet, write it in English and show it to the driver. He'll probably figure it out.

Are you sure that's a street name? A "gu" is like a district or municipality, and a "dong" is like a smaller district within a "gu". I don't see a street name there.

I hate translating romanization, but here goes:

9, 籸

+

what chronicpride said. Taxi drivers usually rock with supermarkets and stuff.

That's not your street address, that's your sub-district. He'll respond in Korean with, 'ok, where the hell do you want to go, in that 20 block radius?'

Do you any distinct landmarks in your area? Like a Yeonsang Walmart-uh or a local E-mart-uh. Get him close to a recognizable location in your area, and point the rest of the way. That address is not going to help him, if translated.

There's not a damn thing near where I'm staying. If I can get him to the street, I can find the place. If I show what I have written down, will he at least go to the street?

Like others have said, that particular bit of information will only tell him what neighborhood you're going to. If you know your way around it, you can make due, but if not, you need a more detailed address.

If you can't tell him which way to go to get to your street, then you'll need the street name. As I said, there is no street name in the "address" you posted above.

4-3 odds that he'll take the paper and do the quick Korean head-tilt, like when they are confused, and will also throw in the quick sucking through his teeth, like while they are thinking, for good measure. If he doesn't do that, then I owe you a beer.

Try it out. And brush up on your pointing skills, if he takes you.

Do you stay in a big apartment complex? If so, tell the driver the name of the complex. Together with the "gu" and "dong", that ought to work. That should work.

Just get in a taxi with 'free interpretation' on the window, alternatively show him your ARC card, or another way would be to actually get someone to tell you in Korean where you live, from your posts you must have been here about three weeks or more, are you retarded? Surely a bit of forward planning might have been in order.....unbelievable...........

Guys- read more carefully, next time. I know this is way late, but the guy said he's on campus at PNU. Perhaps just telling the cabbie "Pusan Dae ga juseyo?" That would get you to the university, and you'd have to walk from where ever he dropped you off.

To the OP: Koreans don't use street names, there's no good reason why not, they just don't. You need to give cab drivers a landmark to guide them, in this case, it will probably be one of the gates of the university.

Gal, I suggest you read it more carefully. He's on the campus and wants to go home, which isn't on the campus otherwise he wouldn't need to catch a bus or taxi, unless it's a super big campus that is.
