Unbelievable that it took 5+ years for them to figure this out:

Sony Moves to MP3
Techtree News Staff
September 24, 2004

In a strategic move, electronics giant Sony has announced that some of its new music player models will now feature direct support for MP3 audio files.

The MP3 format is undoubtedly the most commonly used digital music format. Players like the iPod, which support this, have had an edge over Sony's digital music players that support only the ATRAC format.

Currently, to play an MP3 file on a Sony music player, the user must use Sony software to covert the song into Sony's ATRAC format, a complex procedure that tends to reduce the sound quality of the newly formatted file and takes additional time to load songs onto a Walkman.

By adding MP3 support to its next digital audio players, Sony has addressed those complaints while still offering the ATRAC format for users who are willing to go through the file conversion process. (ATRAC, or Acoustic TRansform Adaptive Coding was first introduced when Sony began selling its MiniDisc-based systems.)

Sony reportedly not only plans to release new devices; but also is working to make available software that will let owners of current models upgrade their devices to add MP3 support.

Jean-Baptiste Duprieu, a spokesman for Sony Europe said that the products being considered for MP3 support are Sony's flash memory storage players. No decision has been made on the new 20 gigabyte hard-drive Walkman and there is no decision on whether it will sell music downloads in the MP3 format from its online download store Sony Connect.

Almost makes me wonder whether Blu Ray really is better than HD-DVD...

Sweet! I was holding off on getting a their new flash-based player because it wouldn't natively support mp3. Great news.
