I will be moving to Seoul in about a month. i have an xbox and a desktop computer here in the states. im wondering if i should sell both of them and purchase new ones in korea, or sell the desktop and purchase a laptop and bring it with me and just ship the xbox over. are computers pretty cheap in korea? also, is it pretty easy to mod an xbox? i saw somebody selling one a while back with 120gb hd and 200+ games for 200,000 won. it would seem more convenient and cheaper to just get a laptop so im not paying for shipping on the desktop and monitor. what do you guys think? thanks

For me, I would go the way of the laptop, purchased at home. Mainly because it's ready to go when you get here. No waiting a couple of weeks to look around, find the best deal, best service, best price, etc.

BUT, if you buy new, one little "take notice" piece of advice...check the restrictions on any warranties you have. I bought a brand new Dell before I came, and paid extra ($50 ?) to add the "world wide warranty." This was after we went to great lengths to make sure that Korea was covered under the world-wide warranty.

Turned out that I had a problem, needed servicing, and DELL Korea would only service Latitude laptops; I had an Inspiron. The part I needed carried the identical part number, but DEL Korea wouldn't touch it, as they weren't licenced. ent through weeks of frustration until I finally had to ship the laptop home, have it serviced and then actually PAY an import tax to have it shipped back to me. (Despite paperwork, original custosm papers stating I had brought it in 3 months earlier, etc etc). TORTURE. So, whatever brand you may buy, check servicing options.

And, regardless of what you do, make sure to bring all of your software - Windows originals, etc. If you purchse here, it will all be in Korean, and I have found English software hard to get (although some of the more with-ti tecchies can probably point the direction to English software?)

Well, like I said, ONE of the DELL laptops has in-Korea service, I am **pretty sure** I had a Latitude, which means that INSPIRONs are serviced in Korea.

If it is of any benefit, the DELL service centre here was pretty good, when I called them back 5 minutes later and lied to them and told them it WAS an Inspiron -- they were ready to dispatch a service agent with the part to come to my hagwan and fix it on the spot that same HOUR.

And they were very polite when they called me back to tell me that they knew I lied.... Embarassed

And in the end, I think my dad "sweet-talked" (read: screamed bloody H**L) at DELL International into paying the shipping charges from Korea-home (and return!) for having mucked up by telling me my Latitude was warranty-serviceable in Korea. Wink
