someone told me yesterday that koreans have a disproportionate incidence of stomach cancer, one of the rarest forms of cancer. dat troo?
if so, what are some possible causes? my first guesses would be korean workaholism and soju. |

nI've heard that too, so I did a quick bit of research and came up with this:

Nationality, one of the risk factors in digestive cancer, is due to the fact that in some parts of the world, such as Japan, Korea, parts of Eastern Europe, and Latin America, many foods are eaten that are preserved by drying, smoking, salting, or pickling. |

Ya, I have heard this too. My coteacher went to visit his friend in the hospital, who had been there for a long time. I asked what was wrong, he said "bleeding stomach."
My first thought was maybe its' a combo of all the live fish, raw beef, and other fun stuff they eat. Eating live food is always bad karma in my books. |

The biggest risk areas when talking about stomach cancer are pickled or excessively spicy food, excessive alcohol consumption, and chronic indigestion caused by these or other factors....................now if you look at how Korea is regarding these factors its not a big leap to understand why they are so screwed in the stomach cancer area.
This also seems to be bourne out by the lower inciences of stomach cancer among women, while this is also true in the West, the difference here is far greater because they are (probably) not exposed to the rampant after work drinking culture (the single biggest factor out of all of them). |

meanwhile at the kimchi museum at COEX mall they have a whole section talking specifically about how the fermented nature of kimchi is good for your guts and produces beneficial bacteria. |

Kimchi in moderation is good for stomach process, due to the fact that it cultivates 'good' stomach bacteria.......moderation, however, is not having lots of pickled and spicy dishes at every meal.......having one alcoholic drink a day actually helps clean your body by acting as a kind of solvent but having ten a day does you damage, same difference........ |

just think of all the kimchi the average 50 year old male has packed away over the years as well as all of the other spiced, fermented and pickled food............coincidence that they are dropping from stomach cancer??????????????..............sure, its good for you in moderation, but like everything here, its too the extreme........................... |

Korea has one of the highest stomach cancer rates in the world.
This is due to the disproportionately high level of salt/sodium in the food here. |

Salt and Alcohol. There is no evidence that spicy food causes any problems to the stomache. That being said, Japan has the highest rate of stomace cancer. I am not real familar with their diet. |

I don't think it would affect cancer per say, but I've yet to meet a Korean who actually took the time to chew their food. |

The combination of bali-bali, stress, bad food and soju would certainly contribute to the high level of stomach cancer in this country. |
