I heard from a friend that over 50% of english teachers in Korea do not have a University degree?

Is this true, because it totally suprised me. This, however, would explain why so many teachers are working for the 1.9 million won saleries.

What's wrong with 1.9 million for a salary? That's what I get, and I love it! You have to remember that not everyone here teaches in Seoul and therefore not everyone gets 2.0-2.2 million.

I know tons of people teaching here and I don't know any that didn't get a degree. I'm sure there are some but I'd be surprised if its even 25%

I knew a few guys in Ulsan doing it. I believe they bought their degrees off that infamous hotmail spam.

I do now. I didn't for 2.5 years. Yes, it's real. I do, however, know a number of people that don't have a degree and likely never will.

endo I think your friend is a little off. Most have a degree, but not all. I'd say something 80-90% yes, not 50/50.

I think a simple B.A. is the question at hand.

This sounds accurate. I've met a couple people teaching with no degree, but not very common at all. Your friend was exaggerating.

Up until October 2001, you didn't need a degree to teach in Korea. Now you do and they are getting a little more serious about people having them. I would agree with the 80 - 90 percent having them. I was one of the original non degree workers but with the change I had to complete my unfinished degree online. Smile

What does that matter? I didn't even need a degree in "education" to get licensed to teach in two states...

this recruiter that i was speaking to told me that most hagwons dont even require a degree. they just want to make sure that you are a native english speaker. the only reason this discussion came up was because i was having a hard time getting my diploma

you can't legally work in this country without one. maybe the school doesnt care... but they sure will when IMMI comes down on them.

This is true. Not even a Korean can teach legally at a hagwon without a degree. It is not a matter of immigration. It is a matter of the law which regulates hagwons.
