I've been looking at a few contracts, and the recruiters have been saying that the schools want someone already in Korea - that they won't pay to fly you over. That's part of my reason for coming to Korea - the pre-paid airfare! Is this getting to be the norm, schools refusing to fly you over?
Any info appreciated. Thanks! |

The only reason a school would already want you here has nothing to do with airfares, it has everything to do with when can you start. I was already here and have an airfare written into my contract. There are heaps of jobs where airfares are provided. Recruiters are generally full of it anyway. |

How many times as this been covered? It's up to YOU...YOU...to get the best contract for yourself. Using recruiters is a cop out and for lazy people in my opinion. Would you use a recruiter in your home country looking for work?!? You get the best deals doing your OWN footwork. If you don't know the ropes...learn them then and make your own way.
As for airfare?Immigration's WEB site states in ENGLISH..(search their site and do the homework) Immigration law states the the sponsor/employer is to pay for return airfare to the employee's home country at the end of the contract. Airfare to korea is a "bonus." Most schools do pay for it but it's not law. It's a carrot on a stick. And many fall for it. Get the best deal for yourself and don't worry about what someone else is getting! Worry about your own self. |

And how, exactly, would you suggest people "learn the ropes" when they live thousands of miles away and don't have the time or money to fly to Korea by themselves and do extensive research on the job situation? |

As discussed many times before in this forum, the law clearly says the employer has to make sure you can afford it, not that they have to give it to you. Same deal with housing in that it says the employer must make sure you have it, not that they pay for it. |

Yes I would. Except in Canada they are generally called headhunters. There are also job-recruiting agencies that help recruit and train employees.

That's easy to say coming from someone already having experience living in the country, already having teaching experience, and not currently looking for a job.
It's a little different if you are on the opposite end of the stick.
To the OP: If you can afford it, be patient and take your time. Take anything a recruiter tells you with a large grain of salt. Don't be afraid -- and in fact, I encourage you -- to politely bargain with a school if you are not satisfied with a contract. The worst they can do is not hire you. You'll eventually find something that feels right. |

| I think that having your airfare paid for may be less common in Seoul than in other parts of Korea. There are so many ex-pats to choose from in Seoul. |

| Every job that I was offered (including Seoul) included round-trip airfare. The job I decided to take tho was offered to me from a korean friend of a korean friend who works at an ESL school in Vancouver. Her and her contact in Seoul did so much for me. She arranged all of my visa and airfare (including paying my airport tax) and also taught me a lot about Korean culture. she also told me that if I ever want privates that she has contacts for that as well. And he not only picked me up at the airport and brought me to the school but made sure my apartment was ok, took me out for dinner, brought me to the hospital for my medical, and came with me for my first day of classes. First class recruiters!!! If you want I'll pm you with the contact info for them. |

| My Boss needs a couple foreign teachers badly and he is playing the whole "let's see if I can already get someone who is in Korean so I don't have to pay for airfare' game. So far he has already gotten one person who was already in Korea. He'll probably break down in a little while and pay airfare if he can't catch a few more suckers. |

I noticed a lot of schools will try to find someone here first(make sense to me) by asking their foreign workers if they know anybody.
More often than not though this doesn't work and they will eventually have to get someone from overseas. |
