You would not be wrong in assuming you were one of only a handful of New Zealanders who knew the founding history of the state of Wisconsin and that James Madison was the only president and Commander and Chief in US history to actively take command of an army unit during the War of 1812
You know the pitfalls and intricacies of Power of Attorney law.
Leaving Korea after your hagwon contract is up you refer to as "PCSing out of Korea".
Getting a cheap standby ticket at Inchon you refer to as "Space A Travel".
The most immoral thing you can do in Korea is purchasing counterfeit sports jerseys in Wong Dong Market, although you have no idea where Wong Dong Market is.
When you return home, not being able to watch Leno and Letterman back to back on the same channel pisses you off.
Watching Oscar night Monday at 8 am just makes so much more sense.
Senior Airman Josie Wise is the most trusted name in news.
You kind of wish newscasters on CNN wore spiffy olive drab uniforms and got buzz cuts.
You sing the 607th Weather Squadron jingle to yourself in the shower.
What keeps you up at night is trying to reconcile your youthful distaste for American military imperialism with your undying gratitude towards the Armed Forces Network for bring you The Simpsons, Scrubs, and Dr. Phil.
Although your free modern, air-conditioned one-bedroom apartment in the heart of Hongdae is a light year better than the hell holes you lived in while going to university, part of you wishes you could live in Warrior Country.
You have no idea what a KATUSA is but you wish you could be one just so you could appear in an AFN public service announcement.
You instinctively practice good OPSEC even though you're not in the military and you're Canadian. |

She's just a temp while they do the rotations. The regular is the grinning gargoyle Army Sergeant Laura Schnooooffnitz.

Isn't it katchi kapshida? ô. Lets go together.
My favorite AFN moment was one that only recently stopped airing, it was from the Commander at Osan with his southern accent... "Recently there have been an increased number of SECT SU AL and violent acts... and all of them involved drinking..." Duh. |

AFN has taught me an invaluable lesson for suicide awareness. Did you know that if someone says, "I just wanna die", then they may be thinking about suicide? |

...when you start believing their view of events and start telling you friends the latest military news that you've got to know and that affects your life as if the information wasn't pre-censored and completely biased...
...when you start beleving that the US must be the only "free" nation in the world, and no longer question what they mean by "free" and by the indiscrminate and inaccurate use of the word "nation"...
...again...just off the top of my head... |

This thread would be a lot funnier if it wasn't so horrifyingly true.
About the katchi kapshida -- I could swear that a year ago or so they had an announcement where 2 guys were saying it and one was almost definitely say kapshi kapshida.
I miss the Korean language tips where the American guy would pronounce everything in terrible romanisation and then the Korean guy would pronounce it in Korean and everyone would pretend that they were remotely similar.
It's good to AFKN though. When you think that Korean TV is the worst TV in the world you can always turn to AFN and realize that all TV is bad.
But we watch it anyway. |

Yeah, I have no idea what a KATUSA is either. At first I thought I heard that the US forces here have a Katyusha battalion. (A katyusha is a WWII-era Russian rocket-firing truck the North Koreans used in the Korean war. Here's a picture of one that's at the Seoul Military Museum:

I noticed one of my students scribbling in a notebook, so of course I wrestled them to the ground and confiscated it. |

I'm trying to stop myself from even typing this as it's so unbelievably sad but a KATUSA is a Korean Attachement to the US Army ie the Korean soldiers who have a good level of English(in theory) so work in conjunction with the good 'ole US boys.
I'm going to go home and cry at the fact that I know that. |

Most of these are (relatively) NEW ads. We all remember Jane, right? Who forgot to wear her protective gear?
And the "biker" who has all his equipment...except fuel for his motor VE hick il.
Oh...and "anthrax"!!! (Hey, isn't that what finally killed off Jane???)
"GET THAT BOOKBAG OFF THE TABLE!!" |

I believe the PLO used to rake Israeli kibutzes back in the '80s with katyusha rockets as well. Remember when they invaded Lebanon and laid waste to Beruit and let the Druze militia into a refugee camp to kill every last man, woman, and child... Yeah that was all because they wanted to chase out the PLO and establish a security zone out of range of the katyushas. |
