| Does anyone know about training for evaluators of the new TOEFL test's (September 2005) speaking portion? Practice Tests will begin this summer. I am wondering if people in Korea will be trained to evaluate the tests or all the spoken recordings will be sent to the Educational Testing Service for evaluation. |

for the speaking section, the students will still need to go to the testing facility and they'll speak into a microphone. ETS had us give our international students the new exam, for testing purposes, and I am quite familiar with it. It, in my opinion, is a marked improvement.
The speaking section lasts about 20 minutes, and will answer 6 questions (via mic). In Q's 1 and 2, Ss will speak about familiar topics, and will be scored on ability to speak clearly and coherently about the topics.
In Q's 3 and 4 they'll read short tests, then listen to a talk on the subject, then asked questions, then must verbally answer by combining appropriate info.
Question 5 and 6 they'll listen to a part of a conversation or lecture, and asked questions about it, verbally, of course.
A clock is on the screen, and shows how much time they've left to prep. an answer....and they'll be able to take notes through the whole thing.
As for being on the assessing team...I'm sure you'd have to be at ETS, or an affiliate.
Shoosh,

And I thought I had the inside track on this. Thanks for the info. I'm pretty curious about the changes myself. |

| I am hoping that ETS will get the road show to Korea, because I really want to learn more about it. Like the TWE, the speaking rubric seems way too vague for my liking. I also would like to know what the scores that the samples on the website would get. They mumble and talk in circles, but there is no evaluation to let the prospective teacher or student know what the speaker would score. |

Welcome to ETS.
As for the answers to your questions, there are numerous factors that cast some light to validity and reliability in the TWE, especially among interrater reliability....just helped a student with a 70 page essay on it.
Vague? Not really, it's holistic, and subjective (though, it does have standards for eval.). Raters go through mad amounts of training for eval. the essays, as will they for the speaking portion.
When things start to get settled, a more detailed rubric will be given. For now, and always, the more 'fluent' a student becomes the less they'll need to worry about 'how-to-take-a-test' (another issue altogether!).

I had the good fortune of working for NCS Pearson for a couple of months a few years back, and our site was scoring the essays for some middle school kids' exams. I wasn't an actual scorer, but it was very interesting to see the process that's used to score essays on standardized tests. |
