A bit of a silly question but hey, I gotta ask somewhere.

I'm starting to put together my suitcase for Korea and was wondering about any clothing issues that may exist.

I had read somewhere (the place all good rumors start) that red is a sad/angry color and not encouraged to wear.

Soo.... should I leave my red sweaters and pants in storage or wear them proudly on the streets of South Korea?

Any other clothing customs I should be aware of?

Many Thanks!

There are millions of Koreans who wear the 'Be the Reds' bright red t-shirt in support of the soccer team so I dont think there is any problem wearing red.

Koreans just happen to opt for drab colors....black, grey, beige...it can be depressing. I used to have a big happy face tie died t-shirt that young and old here loved bring as much color as you want.

Help brighten up Korea/

It is ok to wear red. Just don't write a person's name using red ink.

I think that red pants are pretty much a fashion taboo everywhere.

Not if you got a snazzy pair. They make me smile on the dreary days. But I'm still not sure Korea is ready for them. I only pull them out on the "Horrible, terrible, no good, very bad days" and it usually helps (along with a jelly roll).

- Thanks the tips everyone. the happy red shirt goes in the bag afterall Razz

It used to be a long time ago(make that 5 years) but the World Cup changed all that.

Red is the bad color. Those we don't speak of are attracted to it.

Red was pretty unpopular until the World Cup (yeah, I know someone already said that -- but saying it again lends it more credibility, right?) for the reason that Corporal is hinting at. It's okay now.

Umm, red pants are okay if you're not a guy... You're not a guy, are you?

Wear what you like!

Koreans seem to lack some of the sensibilities that say "Hmmm....I shouldn't wear this."

I saw a guy who looked like Napoleon the other day...what was he thinking? "I wonder what I would look like dressed in 18th century French fashion?" Laughing Seems that while many people may wonder such things and wait for halloween to act upon them, Koreans often just do it.

Anyways, fear not what you wear...some real fashion weirdness here. Not a bad thing....some great getups, but certainly odd. Wink

Do you mean this guy?

Cos unfortunately he was promoting something. Dressing like Napoleon on a whim would definitely be a "Do" though.

Whatever. Phooka, wear what you enjoy wearing. I've owned red pants, metallic green pants, white polka-dot menno pants, pinstriped pants, and purple fleece thermal pants (worn in Korea, BTW).

Red became a popular color after the WorldCup.
One of the reason red color was avoided is because
red is favorite color for communist. Whenever people
protest something, they used to wear red ribon on their head.
- this doesn't mean every protesters are communist.
But also people used to wear red just because they like it.
In korea, only very old people dislike that color.
Young people? who care? Just not to wear it someone's funeral.
Red still mean death. Don't write someone's name with red.
