so I'm looking out my window from the staffroom on the 3rd floor of my school. I see legs. Given that the school is getting some work done on it and there is a giant scaffolding tower around the building I suppose is no surprise.
Watching workman with no safety equipment whatsoever smoking ciggies doesn't bother me. That they are swigging back makolli (spelling?) like there's no tomorrow I find more than a little disturbing. |

Actually that's less a Korean thing and more of a construction worker thing. I dated one for a while when I lived in Canada, and liquid lunches weren't unusual, and niether was weed on the job. |

The same thing is happening at my school. They are building a new school store(candy shop from what I understand). They rate of construction is quite fast, however, it is their attire and equipment that gets me. I saw a man standing in the shovel part of a backhoe the other day. I don't see them drinking anything, but I am sure they are to do that.
The construction thus far looks like a mess of poles, and boards on top, and just watching them stand on its roof makes me very nervous.
I commented to one of the Korean teachers about how fast things are built here, and he said, "Very fast, but not so stable."
This reminds me of another interesting "Only in Korea" story. I live in the teacher's residence, which is said to be about 10 years old. I think this is relatively new by my standards. But I heard that no teacher wants to live there, because they think it is old....Here's why....
Recently a Korean teacher left in a huff and even gave up teaching, b/c get this.....her kitchen cabinets fell off the wall on top of her, and her ear "fell off" in the process! I thought wtf, sounds funny I know, but also kinda scary for me. I never approach the kitchen in quite the same way. |

Booze and scaffolding don't mix well. That is insane.
However, if you're picking apples, a good solid toke or ten at lunch time can actually help you work faster.
My dad's a builder so I've dug more than a few ditches in my time, and no matter how you spin it, it's crap work. Again, a few good tokes or ten can really give you a "whole new way of lookin' at the day" ...[/quote] |

There is a new construction next to my building. They dug a big hole about a meter deep. filled in in with shale, put a thin layer of dirt on top of that. layed out some rebar and put some moulds and filled it in with concrete. thats how far they have got so far. I was surprised they didn't put in a better foundation. I live on the flood plan of a river. the river itself is about 200 meters away from my building. YOu would think that the slab of concrete they laid down would settle unevenly. |
