I want to buy an MP3 player before I return to Canada. Can you recommend one which is good for its value and quality? |

what's important to you: weight, capacity, FM radio, recordability, support of different file formats, style....? |

I don't really know much about MP3 players per se, just know that I want one that is good quality and cheap. |

There are two main kinds, flash or hard disk based- the flash ones are smaller, lighter, never skip, but have far less capacity- 64Mb is about 1 CD worth of music, I think they go up to 1Gb now.
The hard disk ones are the iPod's et al- get the top capacity ones and you can carry your entire CD collection around with you. |

hmmmm....this makes it harder. I think I would prefer the smallest one possible. I only want to hold about 40-50 songs max. |

40-50 songs? If you went with 128k compression (probably wouldn't sound as good as the CD but would be acceptable) you could go with a 256Mb flash player.
Have a look at the prices and pictures on here

iRiver's are made in Korea so you might get one a bit cheaper, there are also lots of smaller brands that you could pick up at Yongsan/Technomart. |

I like the iRiver iFP-190T 256 MB Digital Audio Player. What do you think of that one? |

I've got a hard drive player by iRiver and the sound is great, I'd expect this one to be too. But if it was me I'd be looking for something that accepts some kind of memory card, that way there's some hope of expanding the memory in the future.
Memory prices fall all the time (hard drives, flash cards etc.) but with that model you're stuck at 256 Mb. |

Both the Rio players I recommend are an excellent deal - buy one (one has FM, the other doesn't), and buy a memory card.
With expansion memory up to 512 currently, I am thinking it will meet your needs.
Something you don't like about those 2???

I don't like the idea of having to buy memory cards...I want one with enough there already from the start. I am not very technologically inclined, and I don't like hunting for gadgets. Particularly, if I am gonna buy in a foreign country. I want to know that I will be able to use it in Canada, and get parts for it there. Maybe I can, who knows, but I don't want the associated hassle. I just want something simple and easy to operate.
Thanks for all of your help and knowledge everyone! |

I'm pretty sure the thing will come with memory already installed, but if you can remove the card then you'll be able to expand later with a bigger card. If you run out of space of course.
If not I think you'll probably end up buying one with a bigger capacity somewhere down the line.
There's nothing more complicated about changing memory cards than there is about changing the cassette in a walkman.
Just a thought anyway, I've no idea about prices except to say Yongsan will probably be cheaper than the prices you're seeing on Amazon, and your local supermarket will probably be slightly more. |
