Have you ever found yourself in this situation? Following a day lying in the sun you loll back to your hotel room with a satisfied look gracing your face, feeling confident that youve achieved a perfect golden hue. Youve perfectly executed the rotate and lay method; sure you resemble a Brazilian lifeguard. You step into the bathroom to admire your handy work only to recoil in horror at the sausage-skinned person staring back at you in the mirror.
While the majority of us would love a little color, our jobs and schedules make it difficult for us to enjoy the sun. From apartment to subway, car or bus and into air-conditioned buildings, our days are spent indoors and our complexions reflect it. Pasty, ruddy and sallow might be used as a description for many of the expatriates you might encounter on any given day in Seoul, and for good reason. We live like moles!
Enter Magic Tan. Perhaps youve heard about the new tanning technology sweeping Hollywood, providing the likes of the rich and famous a golden hue for those Oscar acceptance speeches, or at least for their whiskey billboard advertisements in Tokyo.
Owner Jin-Ha Chung, a native of San Francisco, opened Magic Tan in Apgujeong on July 23rd and has seen his client base increase daily as word spreads. Splitting his time between Seoul and San Diego, Chung saw the need for a healthy alternative for sun worshipers looking for the year round bronze. My daughter loves to be tan, but it isnt safe with all the UV rays, replied Chung when asked why he chose to bring Magic Tan to Korea.
Magic Tan uses DHA, a natural sugar that is sprayed on and reacts with your skins first layer. The result lasts for and impressive 7-10 days. The entire process takes less than a minute and leaves you with an even natural tan that looks as if you just arrived back from somewhere warm. You can tell your coworkers you took a quick trip to Bali, chuckled Chung as I left Magic Tan.
Magic Tan serves about 70% females at this point and their clientele runs the gamut from famous Korean pop singers like Koo Jun Yup to actors like Ryu Sung Bum all the way to English teachers and tourists. A Tokyo investment group who visited the store before our interview will be opening the first Japanese branch in October.
As the Korean winter steadily approaches, keep Magic Tan in mind if you arent able to make that beach holiday, the mirror wont know the difference.
Prices range from 35,000 won for one session or 150,000 won for 5. For those willing to commit they offer 10 sessions for 280,000 that should keep you bronzed for the entire impending artic winter.
Magic Tan is located in Apgujeong near Rodeo Street opposite Pascucci Coffee. They are on the fourth floor above a Buy The Way. For more information call 02 5427 010 or visit www.magictankorea.com if your Hangul is up to snuff. |
