If any of you guys can help me out there will be a beer in it for you..

I just got back after an overextended vacation in the UK and my computer was being stored by a friend. It wasn't used at all to my knowledge in this period and was in perfect working order when I left at the start of August.

I get back last week and what happens when I switch the damn thing on? It blue screens and complains about my my BIOS being screwed up! This is the first time a computer has ever gone blue screen on me and it is deeply annoying. Windows 2000 does start to boot but it goes wrong quickly after that and blue screens. I've messed a bit with my CMOS and settings but nothing seems to work.

I have tried starting it in safe mode, I've tried reinstalling windows (fortunately I have everything backed up- even farcry save games!) it doesn't work! It just gets stuck on a blue screen, with that damn BIOS error incompatable message.

My computer is seemingly knackered. I'm maybe going to take it to Johnny's in Itaewon but if anyone knows a solution or workaround that will get me going again, I'd be a happy boy indeed.

Could it be that damp has effected the MB? -it was stored in a bit of a damp environment and humidity is very high in August here.

Am I being a muppet?

Any positive suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Why would my OS suddenly decide that the BIOS is incompatable? As I said before it was working fine until it went into storage.

If anyone out there has had a similar experience and got around it then I'd be happy to hear any suggestions.

Need the exact message about the BIOS in the bluscreen.

Have you tried removing the battery from the mainboard to reset the bios? Remove the battery for 10 minutes.

Did you go into the bios and check the settings? Do you know what to look for when you get in there?

What kind of mainboard do you have? Do you know what kind of BIOS it is? (Award, Phoenix, etc...)

Did you look inside the case to check for any physical problems which may have occurred during the move?

Are you absolutely sure the computer wasn't used?

I think that would be the first place to start.

What demo said- you could try re-seating the RAM, video card, make sure the interior cables are all snug, etc.

I screwed around with the bios setting some more. Stopped getting the blue screen nonsense but it still wouldn't work.

Today I noticed a computer repair shop opposite my house on a little back street and popped in and talked to the ajoshi in there. He screwed around with it a bit popped out the network card, deleted some files and fixed the thing in about an hour! Very Happy

He only wanted 10000 won but I gave him 15000. The guy was a star!

Good. Was there any damage to the files or was everything intact?

BTW, that "blue screen nonsense" can be life saving info in the right hands.

Everything seems to be working fine. It's only been on a few hours but all seems to be in order. It was the weirdest thing and I can't believe the guy only wanted a manwon for the valuable service he gave me!

Situations like that restore my faith in people Very Happy The guy looked a bit embarrased when I gave him the extra 5000 but he earned it and it would be sad to see a cool guy like that go out of business as his pricing policy seems a bit suspect. In the UK some bugger would have charged me 60 pounds for that . I wouldn't pay in the UK as a friend would be able to sort it out for free, but I'm the only guy out of all my friends here who has a clue about computers!

I was a bit annoyed that I had to even get someone else to have a look at it, but pride can be a counterproductive quality at times Embarassed
