I use my PS2 to watch DVDs. It's been modded to play copied games, and occassionally scrambles the picture on movies (it's fine if I scan past the "glitch" moment), but tonight as I was watching a DVD, the disc started pausing and skipping forward. I've watched the same movie before, and with no problem. When I took the disc out, there was a tiny "blotch" which almost looks like the disc was scorched. There also appears to be slight warping around the blotch.
Is this possible? Can DVD players (or, more accurately, PS2s) 'eat' DVDs? Or is it more likely that the blotch was always there and I was lucky to have no problem while watching it the first time?

| Was it an actual retail DVD or was it one that you made with a DVD+R/W or CD+R/W drive. If it was a burnt copy, this could account for the damage to the disc since not all writable discs are made equal. Discs with silver or blue surfaces, especially, are only meant to be temporary backup mediums and will often degrade in quality in a year or less after being made. If you want something better, look for discs with gold surfaces which will last longer but cost more. |

It's a retail copy of Lost In Translation, region 1 (NA).

| Looking for advice on a modded machine is tough, unless they are all modded in the same way by the same person. There could be anything under the hood in there, and who could know? There may indeed be something that is heating up one area of the DVD, but that seems odd, as they spin, making a burn in one area very unlikely...it would be a 'band' if it were melting or burning the disc. It was probably like that when you bought it. |
