Celebrate Bavarian bravado at Seoul Hilton`s Oktoberfest

The Seoul Hilton`s annual Oktoberfest is back for two days of Bavarian food, beer and bravado.
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26-27. The Convention Center at the Seoul Hilton will be transformed into a gargantuan Oktoberfest-style tent, setting the scene for Seoul`s version of the world`s largest beer festival.

On tap will be a smorgasbord of Bavarian food, unlimited beer, wine and soft drinks. Music will be performed by Munich-based "Banater Musikanten."

Arm-wrestling contests, drinking competitions and prize giveaways, including airfare to Germany, BMW merchandise and vouchers for hotel stays and restaurants will also be presented.

Photographers will be on hand to snap free photographs of guests throughout the evening.

Tickets are 79,000 won (inclusive of service charge and tax). For reservations or additional information, call 02-317-3066.

UNLIMITED BEER...HMMMM...It conveniently doesn't specify if that will be Korean or German, and yes, it matters.

I called and made my reservations, and while I was on the phone I asked about the beers. I was told that there will be Korean beer (Cass), plus German beers.
Also, I was told that they have already sold 1000 tickets Shocked Laughing for the night I'm going.

By the way, I hear the reason Germans drink so much beer is that they heavily salt their food. Is this true?

I lived in Dresden for almost 3 years and I can tell you that it's not true.
The beer is just very good, so why not drink it? That said, I was in Berlin in February visiting friends and noticed more people drinking wine. I asked about this and was told that wine consumption is on the raise.

Question answered. The unlimited beer you will be drinking will be CASS. Nasty. The worst of the worst. You [undoubtedly] pay for the good (imported) stuff. For 70,000 won, you lose.

Idea: Buy a bunch of GREAT, reasonably priced beer from Carrefour and some German weiners (yep, they've got those, too). Invite your buddies to a park near your home. Have a weinie roast with people you like, and beer that you can truly appreciate, and all for under 20,000won.

I went to the Busan version of the Hilton Octoberfest (same kind of food setup, alcohol setup, exactly the same giveaways, same band etc) at the Marriott the last 2 years and while the 2001 version was excellent, with at least 5 kinds of unlimited German beers, the 2002 version decided that Octoberfest doesn't need German beer, except if you wanted to pay around W10,000 a bottle for it.

Assuming the Hilton isn't doing things differently (and the fact that Cass is on hand is a huge warning sign, whatever they say on the phone), isn't German beer--at reasonable prices if nothing else--the whole reason of having Octoberfest?!?

Anyway, as Mack the Knife said, it does matter, and I'm not going this year. Even the Busan price (W45,000) isn't enough to convince me. Asking for W79,000 seems like a complete rip off. Mad

Bavarian food Tiger, not beer. Alas.

I've been to these before--they're not worth the money.
