Every job offer that I have received, I hear the same BS: the school is very reputable, i've known the director for "x" years, he's great, they've never had problems, we work with them all the time, this is a great school, theres a lot of foreign teachers in the area so im sure you'll be happy, blah blah blah.
I have turned down almost every offer I have received. These recruiters dont listen to anything I say. My resume says I am looking for a position in Seoul or Busan. In the email I send with my resume, I tell them Seoul or Busan only, no satellite city. And then they reply with offers in cities other than what I request; trying to convince me to take the job. after i refuse, i never hear back from them. im starting to learn that recruiters dont really care about anyone but themselves and the $ they'll make off of me |

Quite honestly, there isn't a huge market for Asian English teachers over here in Korea. There are many other Kyopo's or Koreans who can fill that need. Not until you get over to Korea first will you find that to change. Even then, it's not that easy for an Asian to find a job teaching English in Seoul or Busan. Like it or not, it's just a fact.
It's quite possible that recruiter just can't find you a job in seoul or busan b/c the directors have already shot you down immediately when they viewed your photo. Those cities are more desirable and thus the directors have a bigger supply of teachers (IE. White Faces) to choose from. Which leaves you S *** out of Luck. The reason the recruiters try to convince you on the satelite cities, is probably b/c that is what you are going to have to settle for to get a decent job. If it is so hard to find a job in Seoul or Busan, just remember that the Director who is willing to accept an Asian face will probably be quite desperate and your working conditions will be quite crap. It has nothing to do with the recruiter being in it only for the money. Your inflexibility has left you as highly undesirable and unemployable to them, which is why you never here from them again. One of my friends is a recruiter. She told me that if an applicant is inflexible they just move onto the next person.
Be willing to live in a satelite city. What is this big facsination with Seoul or Busan? They aren't the end all of places to work. |

I had a recruiter tell me when something wasn't right with the school. He knew something was up when the employer asked me to work the afternoon, as he put it, to show what I could do. The recruiter translated, but told me later that it wasn't a good thing to do, and that he found out their last teacher had pulled a runner. Probably the only recruiter I would ever recommend too. He's based in Ilsan, Hwa Seung region (north of Seoul). Don't know if he is still in business though.... |

Those recruiters probably don't have the connections to get you exactly what you need, but just throw what they have on the table. Can't blame them for trying, even if it's not tailor-made.
Are they so different from anyone else in wanting to make money?
I think you are confused as to what a recruiter's job is. He is to link you up with prospective employers, not walk you around by the hand. He finds you a job and that's it. They aren't babysitters, they are business people.
Do you care about them? Aren't you only interested in them because they will in fact be finding money for your pocket as well? Seems to me like the same animal we're talking about here.
Why don't you just come here on your own nickel if you are so let down by the recruiters? You have a greater chance of finding work if you are here in person. |

| im not expecting them to walk me by the hand to find me a job. what bothers me is them not even paying attention to the locations i would like to work in. they offer maybe 2 jobs in completely different cities and then try to convince me to take it. when i dont, i never hear from them again. i would think that if they really wanted $, they would keep offering jobs and maybe pay attention to the requests that i have. |

Exactly. Maybe the schools in Seoul and Busan don't want you as a teacher. However, the schools outside of those cities are willing to hire you. |
