So I was out with some friends in Shinchon this evening and there were about a dozen guys in really smart looking suits, shades and earpiece radios..All very official government agency looking..I thought they were bodyguards for a politician or something but a few of them were chasing and hassling girls on the street. Generally looking extremely suspect.

Very strange indeed...Does anyone know who they might have been? Im pretty new to korea so maybe this is a silly question..Just kind of weirded me out.

They work for night clubs. They give girls a free table inside so that the guys will have some booking action.

The more important they seem (the more they look like g-men) the bigger and better the night club.

I was in Shinchon Sunday night. I don't know if it was the same guys, but going back to the hotel after the bar (about midnight), I get approached by these young guys in suits trying to convince me to go check out their nightclub across the street. I immediately remembered all the stories in various countries about how some shady guys will convince lone males to go to a bar with them, which is actually a hostess bar, and stick him with the check for all the hostesses' drinks (which are outrageously priced, or worse: in some instances just drug your drink and max out your credit card) so I just instinctively said "no thanks, man" and went on my way. Not sure if they were legit or not, but definately not worth the risk. These guys were very well dressed for nightclub hawkers, and most likely mob-tied.

Best response I've seen in a while ... thanks for making it unnecessary for ME to say it.

I believe they're called "Ppikki(s)". They hassle my wife right in front of me at times. It infuriates her, but I actually find it quite complimentary.

are the clubs they advertise actually any good or are they all dodgy little places? Im looking out for some good clubs but im not keen about taking business to people who tote for business in such a way.

The Korean-style night clubs aren't really dodgy, at least not the way that you seem to think they may be.... However, they do mostly suck, you may want to take your business to better places. Two cases in which they're good:

1) You're brand-spankin' new here and any/everything Korean is a mesmerizing novelty.
2) You're semi- old school here, and are in the place with some Korean friends (and you can tolerate the dj shouting every 6.75 seconds throughout the song...)

The prices there aren't cheap, but they're not sky-high either... It just seems, from my experience, that not many way-gooks enjoy going to 'em than much. I might go once every few months if the situation arises, but I typically don't make much a point of it...

What makes it such a great response? A question was asked, and instead of giving some input if he had some, he just makes a snide comment to make himself feel superior.

Oh yeah, what an awesome response! Very Happy

Sorry.

Look, I seldom venture out of Current Events much these days and one reason is that the naive nature of questions and observations about Korea from people new here often look so embarassing when seeing them posted on a bulletin board. The embarassment aspect is due to the fact that I recognize my own earlier self, five years back, and part of me cringes at the sight.

(I also love to scribble in notebooks and even though I save journals I wrote 5 and 10 years back I seldom do open them and read them ... same phenomenon at work. Hard to look at how clueless one once was - but it's possible I should do this more often in order to have empathy when I read threads like this.)

A strange dichotomy, though ... when I meet people in person who have only been in the country a few months it's a totally different thing. I enjoy watching their reactions and thinking back to when it was all totally new and interesting merely for it's novelty, rather than for the deeper experiences I've been having lately. I like to be around people like that, and to experience the place vicariously with them and recall the electricity I felt in myself when I first came here..

Korea is a fascinating place, and I could do a lot better than to criticize people who are making wrong assumptions and asking questions that, to me, seem obvious and clueless and a little silly ... despite the arrogance I see laced through this post, please understand that it is intended as apology, and try to accept it as such.

I dont really see my post as being clueless or naive..Im well aware of the nightclub hawkers as I see them every night, i just hadnt seen these guys in suits before..I live in shinchon and im out every single night...Im still not entirely sure they were nightclub guys, they seemed far too organised and co-ordinated. They were also congregated along one particular stretch of street about 100 yards long. The stretch of road in question not being highly populated compared to the rest of shinchon and with no visible nightclubs.

Personally I dont really find korea to be that different when it comes to everyday things..My life here is pretty much the same as it was at home, save the fact that there arent quite so many white folks here.
