Adventureman, why not just give written notice according to the terms in your contract? Rather than up and quitting, follow the procedure set out in your contract.

Contriving a family emergency is not the best choice to make...you'd be surprised at the early death rate of ESLers in Korea; makes one wonder about the genetics of early death. Rolling Eyes

True, leaving your job early by breaking your contract COULD result in a black mark on your record for future consideration for a job in Korea. If you're Canadian, there's an easy way out: get a new passport with a new passport number and that should fix you up should you want to return any time soon.

Best bet...exit the contract legally and properly. Our rep as teachers is bad enough hin some circles without another story a teacher pulling a runner. (Note: none of these comments are meant to apply to you in an insulting or overly critical way; I'm just trying to outline some options.)

Tell them you extended your first contract for 6 more months only.

Do what you need to do to make yourself happy.
I'm quitting my first contract after 5 months. I've already given the school notice. I've previously worked for a full year in another country, so I'm not too worried about what it will look like to future employers. Your situation is even better because you worked more than a year at the same place.

Hi adventureman, if I were in your shoes, I would finish your current contract at the 6-month mark. If I read your post correctly, that gives you about 2 1/2 months left to go, which is ample time for your employer to find a replacement.

I can't see forsee any problems with future employers if they see that you worked 18months for the same employer, especially if you maintain good terms with your employer after you leave.. For all they know, your employer begged you to stay on for an extra 6months.

I find myself in a situation simular to yours. My job is going well and everything, but yet, my life has become tiring, predictable, and well, boring, and I have an irresistible itch to move on. Though for now, I'm planning to stick out my contract for financial reasons.

Just inform them, and let them find a replacement. Work until that time.
