Anyone know if these AV programs are any good (F-Prot Anti-virus and Kaspersky Anti-virus). I have them, and am not sure if I want to install them.

Will having several antivirus programs running on a computer do strange things?

Hmmm multiple AV programs might be good, like using 2 condoms. Running two memory resident shields might be over kill. I would think it might be better to have only one running and do a couple scans a week with another virus program.

Don't use either:

I downloaded AVAST anti-virus for free, and I like it a lot. It has no conflicts with running Zone Alarm with a firewall, and automatically updates (you can set the update engine to several time frames. Mine does daily). It is much easier on the system than Trend Micro was -- hated that, and TM now forces you to use their Firewall. I like ZA as a firewall!!!

AVAST is free for 3 months from www.downloads.com. It says on there that you can keep reinstalling it for free after the three months is up, but I haven't reached 3 months yet (not sure if what they say is true about that).

A very good program, and lots of options for different scanning methods!

And don't run several anti-virus programs. Just overkill and cause for problems.

I did run F-Prot in the past, and it was fine. I ran out of the free trial and dumped it, though.

With Trend Micro, I had figured out a way to manually update the virus definitions for free, so that's why I had it so long. Hated it, though, and it wasn't allowing bittorrents, so that was the final straw.

Verdict:
Kaspersky has made a giant leap with the usability of its software and is now right up there with the big boys. If you're looking for a good value, no-fuss solution to protecting yourself from viruses, perhaps to live side by side with existing firewall and security software, Kaspersky is an excellent option.
