I thought I'd share this experience with you all.
Yesterday as I was sitting in the bus on my way to school a group of students from my school got on. One boy was very polite and said to me "Good morning teacher". I was impressed with his manners and his pronunciation. He then turned to a girl student sitting opposite and gave her a one finger salute.
I'm not questioning his behaviour towards the girl student (although I would not have done that myself when I was his age). What really amazed me was the almost instantaneous switch from being polite to being rude.
Is he a Korean Jeckyl and Hyde ?? |

One of the biggest problems with the old one finger salute is that Koreans teach their children that it means 'go away'
Not exactly the level of rudeness it conveys in the West
I checked out 3 dictionaries: Belitz Korean-English English-Korean as well as two other Korean dictionaries(with the help of my co-teacher) and they all say that Eff you means 'go away'
Interesting. To the boy he was just telling the girl to go away. |

Thanks for your comments.
However, the girl was already sitting in a seat and there were other empty seats when the boy boarded the bus so he could not have been telling her to go away. I suspect that he knew the western meaning of that gesture. |

The boy and the girl were in some little spat, and you were played so he could get points in their little spiff. I don't think the boy student really cared about his English there and then. |
