Buying a laptop: Korea or Canada?

I'm coming to Korea later in November, and as I'm leaving my rusty old desktop back in Canada, it's time to buy a laptop. But should I buy here in Canada, or do it in Korea?

At the moment I'm thinking I'll spend about CDN$1500 on a used Toshiba Satellite here in Canada, then take it to Korea with me. On the other hand, I could buy a laptop when I get to Korea. However, I've heard that laptops aren't much cheaper in Korea, and the tech/layout is different over there so I'd be better off with a North American model. Is this true?

To clarify my needs: This is a comp I'd hope to get at least 3 years of use out of. Don't need it for high-end stuff like gaming... I'd use it for word processing, web surfing, movie/music downloads, watching DVDs, burning CD-ROMS (don't care about burning DVDs). It should have WiFi. Also, this is a computer that may well end up backpacking with me after I leave Korea, so a unit that is relatively light and sturdy would be best.

So I suppose I have two questions:

1) Buy in Canada or Korea?
2) What model(s) should I consider?

Thanks for your input in this, currently a pressing matter in my world.

You can get a decent desktop here for around a third of that price and just sell it when you leave. Got burned when the Toshiba Satellite I had baked itself to death last summer. Mad

1) Canada. Can play games on that awful trans-Atlantic flight. Shopping for electronics in Korea can be stressful. Salesmen will try to bugger you.

2) I'd recommend an Apple IBook 12". $1300. Just updated two weeks ago. Does everything you want. Small and sturdy. Sexy as hell. K-girls will see it and want to have sex with you.

Trans-Pacific, eh.

Yeah, buy a laptop in Canada. Prices aren't all that better here. You do run a risk of being ripped off. Being a FOB, you're confused as hell. I keep seeing people who buy laptops, get Korean XP installed, and think there is a magic button to switch it to English.

Just remember to pack all the original CDs, the OS plus the laptop disk image CDs. It's a nasty, nasty world out there and odds are you'll have to format your HD and re-install some time during the year you're here.

Your laptop power supply is easy to switch over to Korean. The cord that plugs into the wall snaps out of the transformer box. You can buy a Korean plug version for about a buck and snap it into the transformer.

I bought a Compaq Armada E500 laptop in Canada before I came to Korea. International model that comes with a transformer for different voltages. Great little $1,600 rig that has always served me well. Very easy to get serviced here because of the international warranty and Hewlitt Packard service centers.

Having all the software in English is a definite bonus too.
