My aussie coworkers don't like to eat the lunch here. I generally don't like it either. Especially since we have FISH at least 3 times per week.

They seem to recycle the fish, adding more and more ingredients until the end of the week when they make it into some red stew with the fish thrown in -- bones and all.

It's horrible.

It is now obvious, and a little unnerving, because my coworkers always stop what they're doing and watch us foriegn teachers enter the room, and look at what's for lunch. They seem to almost be betting whether or not we will eat there or head out or something.

I can't count how many times I've been asked, 'Don't you like Korean food?"

My aussie coworkers hate it as much as I do. They brought a sandwich-cooker to the dining room once, and that caused quite a stir and lots of chatter. I joined them for a sandwich while everyone else ate the usual gruel.

They recycle the fish so much, we don't mind making a statement.

The kids get more (and different) menu items often. Not the teachers.

I bring a peanut butter sandwich everyday. It reminds of me of my younger days. Although I am getting tired of it, its still better than the mystery food in the cafeteria.

I am the first and only foreign teacher they have ever had. My boyfriend and I are the only foreigners in the town. I tried eating in the caf, but they watch me use the chopsticks, and when I don't eat very much, they talk and say that I am wasting away.

I asked them one day if they ever tire of eating rice, they said "no," without a second thought. I know I was certainly tired of it......

So now I bring my sandwich each day, and they say "are you coming for lunch?" And I always say, "no, I brought mine." Then they laugh, because they think I am not eating the "well-being style."

Ah well, I am still alive.

I'm eating Korean food everyday for lunch and it has been, for the most part, excellent. I, of course, absolutely gag at seafood so whenever they have seafood (very expensive crab, octopus etc.) I simply say it makes me sick and I would rather they enjoy it. Today for lunch we had rice with firefox grains, pork cutlets with some sort of sauce, two kinds of kimchi, pumpkin soup, and a yogurt drink. good eating!!

I get asked constantly about what I think of Korean food as well.
Why does it seem like Koreans have such an inferiority complex with it comes to others people's opinions of their food?

P.S. I LOVE SPAM...been loving it since was but a wee lass....I must eat an entire can at least once a week...especially good with eggs and green tobasco sauce on the side, or, even better, velvelta shells and cheese..mmmmmm...crazylemongirl can I come eat lunch at your school on SPAM day next time?

Spam and Marmite, 2 things that make me sick. My friend and I went out last week for "garbage soup" Seems during the Korean war the Koreans were starving, so the GI's gave them their let over food. We have a resturant here who serves their version, called "garbage souP' Has in it chunks of spam, a bit of pepparoni (wish I knew where they got the peparoni), buts of Ramyan, bits of spaghetti, water and hot paste. Truely tasted and smelled like garbage. FIrst Korean meal I could not eat. And as far as Marmite is concerned, even the smell bothers me. The man I live with loves that stuff, was brought up on it. So, I try not to make any comments when he eats that. But then again, he does not eat the things I eat like tofu chopped up with cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, raisens, nuts, and balsamic vinegar. To each his/her own as far as taste is concerned. But Spam.........................
