The piece of shit stopped downloading windows 98.
It'd get stuck halfway through the boot, and just stay on a blank screen.
So I wrote over it with Windows 2000. Reformatted, the works.
Latest bull shit is it connects, runs really well, but then disconnects after 5 minutes. Every time.
Friend uses that same copy of Windows 2000 and claims it works fine on his computer. Any ideas how to fix this bullshit, or should I test the aerodynamics of a 100 buck computer off my 5th floor balcony....? |

How about this....
If you are going to be so chincy and buy a piece of crap, how about learning how to maintain it? I mean hey, it's old, cheap and it's Win98...what do you want? It's guaranteed to be a black hole as far as return-on-investment. How about buying a confidently functional, non-pirated OS, unless you are happy having to second guess evey install.
But I digress....
The obvious solution is to launch it from the balcony. |

I didn't buy it. So as far as a return on an investment I got my money's worth after the first time I turned it on.
It's part of my contract, so it's the bosses responsibility to sort it out, but if it were something relatively minor I'd rather just take care of it myself than waste half a weekend waiting for computer adjoshi to tell me it's a piece of crap. |

Cool. Too bad it doesn't work...

You turned it on and watched it crash. I guess it would make a cool little table, so you're probably right.
It's part of my contract, so it's the bosses responsibility to sort it out
So, what was the question again? Your boss's phone number?
but if it were something relatively minor I'd rather just take care of it myself than waste half a weekend waiting for computer adjoshi to tell me it's a piece of crap.
I can help here.... It's a piece of crap.
I'm just pulling your leg....however, nothing changes the fact that it's your lemon. Why not just get a better one from your boss? Surely he can't enjoy paying for a computer dude to come.
Also, nothing in your OP tells me anything that could possibly enable me to help. Need info...much more info. |

Connects to internet then disconnects after five minutes sounds like that security patch thing that was doing the rounds early this year on XP systems, and I think 2000?
Anybody else rember what it was called? |

Yup, I was thinking the same thing "sounds like that virus that screws up the remote call procedure."
Do you get any warning, blue screens etc. or does it just hang?
I don't remember what it was called either, but search Google for Sasser, Welch, and MyDoom removal tools. |

No, I remember that virus, I had that last year also.
MS Blaster (....??)
That one actually shut down the computer, but was easy to fix. (just switch on zone alarm)
This just disconnects.
I'll get the boss to either replace it or take the hard drive to someone to fix tomorrow and let you know what it turns out being. |
