I'm a bit of a driving fiend and like nothing better than to pack the car with a picnic lunch, load the family and cruise out of Seoul usually without a destination in mind, I tend to just follow my nose.

One of my favourite haunts is North Kyonggi Do, up around the Paju area. Driving through the back roads you come upon royal tombs, museums, parks, rivers, small villages, without the presence of villas or apartments, rather the traditional houses.

Anyway, yesterday I happened on a ferryboat that plies the Imjin River. According to the promotion this river has been closed for civilian traffic for the past 54 years and only now has allowed a couple of boats to travel up a section. The boats are re-constructions of the types of vessels that used to ply the world for 2000 years up until the 1920's. .

It was a fairly interesting trip and the Captain of one of the boats speaks excellent English, and seems to have many interesting tales to tell. He lived in NZ for five years in the 70's and worked for a fishing company. He remembers fondly the great All Black Fraser, and Fraser's 'corner' whatever that was. It's called the Imjin Hwangpo Ferryboat Tour on highway 37. Recommended as part of a day trip to the Paju are, NOT as the sole reason for going there

Do you have any day trips you would recommend?

Songni mountain is good this time of year. Good for hiking and they also have a big temple and a 50 foot Gold plated Budha statute. (Bopjusa) if that is your sort of thing.

The folk village is nice and I take visitors there on ocassion, however I consider the East Sea is more of a weekend trip rather than a day trip, but yeah it's a great place to go.

Songnisan to the Southeast of Daejon. From Seoul, I am not sure how long it would take. (Just b/c i never went there from Seoul) My best guess is about a 2 hour drive.

Mt. Songnisan National Park

Address : Goesan-gun and Sangpan-ri, Naesokri-myeon, Boeun-gun, Chungbuk / Sangju-si and Munkyeong-si, Gyeongbuk

Description :

Mt. Songnisan National Park is composed of Mt. Songnisan and Hwayang, Seonyu, and Ssanggok Valleys. Mt. Soknisan has the honor of being one of Koreas most beautiful sites. It starts from a southwesterly mountain branch from Taebaeksanmaek and stands in the middle. The granite peak of the Mt.Songnisan stand sharply against the sky, but Toejeokam is hewn deeply and makes a deep contrasts between the peak and the valley. Mt. Songnisan is also called Sogeumgangsan as well. On Mt. songnisan is one of the largest temples in Korea called Beopjusa Temple. At the temple, there is a Maaeyeoraeuisang carved on a rock. Monk Uisang refers to a sitting Buddha statue, and a Maaeyeoraeuisang describes the Buddha sitting on a lotus flower, which is the picture carved on the rock. The years have damaged the picture quite a bit, but the original picture can still be seen clearly. In any picture taken of Beopjusa Temple, one object that always gets included is the Cheongdongmireukbul, which is the largest of its kind in the world. Because Mt. Songnisan has such a great temple in its midst, it possesses numerous treasures and National Monuments befitting its 5,000 year history. Beopjusa Temple is the blossoming of a long history of Buddhist culture developed on Mt. Songnisan. Mt. Songnisans deep valleys invite countless mountaineers and the many Natural Monuments has made it a major tourist attraction. The mountain is beautiful all year round, with mountain cherry blossoms in the spring, green pine forest in the summer, and the lovely autumn leaves in the fall.

So many recommendation, and in a bout a month I may even b e begging for a ride. Try out the cabins at Youngyoungsan, get some friends together, lovely countryside, nice cabins, great grilling possibilities.

Danyang is not out of reach, and the caves around it are fun to explore.

Gongju and Buyeo are fun, Gyeryongsan is one of my favorite little visited National Parks, Woraksan is another easy ride from Seoul.

There are some great areas...although always plenty of people crowding them if the weathers good.. i'm familiar with gangwha, paju area around han-imjin rivers, and the mountains/lakes around Chuncheon...never go south of seoul..

I went down there about 6 weeks ago..
it was cool..
you can see my pictures on here.. somewhere..

anyway take the NUMBER 1 freeway to deajon and just before daejon there will be an exit telling you to exit..

or you can take the 100 freeway and get off that way and take the back roads around alittle longer of course.. well much longer..
I came back that way and stayed a couple nights at some resort spots..

anyway get online and find the routes thats what I did..
a good site to start with is..

www.lifeinkorea.com

goodluck..
ohh thats right.. you can find my pics in the BRUCE LEE GAME OF DEATH thread.. becuase this pagoda and the previous statue which was destroyed in the 80's was in that movie.. you are going to see the pagoda
which is the oldest and only wooden pagoda in korea..

Cheers Itaewonguy,
How long did it take for you to drive down?

I prefer the back roads to highway driving depending of course on available time. How long by highway 1 compared to 100
