I don't know if anyone is interested in this topic, but the following article documents the history of hagwons in Korea. It is interesting to learn that private learning schools were once banned by the government for an entire decade. Private teachers could get fined, arrested, or expunged from the country. They were only legalized 15 years ago. Fifty years ago women were rarely allowed to attend school. A lot has changed in Korea's educational system.
