We were discussing stress in class today and this 20 year old student told us her schedule. She gets up at 5AM and has her first class at 7:15AM and then does her major classes, followed by an academy class ,followed by 7-8 hours working in a coffee shop. She averages 2-3 hours of sleep on weekday nights. She works 7 days a week for US500.00 a month. She does not live with her parents and chooses to work so as to save for future travel opportunities.

One semester I worked fulltime, attended university fulltime and was doing an internship in a group home........it is dreadful to have such a schedule, but I slept much more than she does.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, she has my sympathy to a certain extent but, is she choosing to do the academy classes? It has become a Korean mind-set that you have to attend hagwons to pass tests. Having worked in hagwons for 4 years I'd argue they achieve next to nothing in this respect. Most academies have terrible curriculums.

Can't she find a part-time job with less hours?

I feel more sorry for the elementary, middle and high school students who aren't given a choice about their merciless schedules.

Man I'm sure she's been living like this since grade school too. I do sometimes like to torture my kids by telling them what the life of my 12-year old nephew is like back at home.
