I just got my computer, but the onboard video is only the SIS661 or some such thing and my favorite games Morrowind, Rise of Nations and Empire Earth cause it to crash.

I had the same problem back in Mexico and putting in a 440MX card solved the problem, I don't need anything super powerful, just something that will run RPG and RTS type games.

What is the best bet for under 100,000? I have seen FX5200, the odd FX5700LE and the good old MX440 in this price range, also some ATI cards, ATI7000 for about 46,000 and an ATI 9200 for 100,000.

Or anything else you might recommend.

You can get the Radeon 9200, 9250, 9550, or, at a pinch, a 9600SE for under 100,000 won.
If you prefer nVidia, you could get a GeForce4-Ti4200 or a FX5500 for just under 100,000 won.

That would give you what you need, and the better ones will give you *far* better performance than a GeForceMX-anything. Smile

Don't skimp on the video card if the games you love are crashing, you'll be throwing away your money.

For ATI don't get anything under the 9700 chipset (9500 pro, 9700); It's a bit confusing- the 9500 (std., not pro) is not this level of chipset, while the 9600 is actually above it (as a scaled down 9800 chipset).

Muggie's suggest of a 9600SE is a safe bet.

geforce 4 ti4200 128mg will be what you are needing..
its just 100.000

dunno, some Nvidia drivers crashed my machine spectacularly, so I avoid all their stuff if I can, but others say good things , but I'm very happy with my 9600XT.........

The argument between Nvidia vs. ATI these days is kind of like Windows vs. Apple.

But it's seriously yesterday's hardware. DX8 and all. That card is already 2 complete product cycles old (nearly 2 years) and it's not even worth the 100,000.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone right now....well, ok....maybe my father, but he isn't a power user. Laughing

When it comes to glitches, it's usually software, as no company can even begin to fathom the amount of stuff and configurations of each individual. They shoot for the norm hardware wise and basic software configs, which isn't always suitable.

ATI do have quite high standards when it comes to production, and thus most ATI cards (and Nvidia for that matter) don't stray far from the reference design. Nvidia lets people loose a bit more on the cooling side of things, but basic PCB layout is usually the same. This keeps their name safe and standards high.

I have found ATI to be top notch, and would side with Gord in agreeing that it is more likely to be your individual system's problem, though one cannot completely rule out a defect in the card....it does happen.

For the newest cutting-edge stuff, I'd go nVidia.
At the price range you're looking at, I'd go ATi.
My general advice: Radeon 9550 or 9600SE. They're not all made equally well, so gimme an email sometime if you want some more info.
