Are they nude or clothed?

I'm sure this has been talked about before but I want to make sure.

The onsen in Japan were all nude, and I have no problem with it, but better to be safe than sorry, I figure. Is there a distiction, between the dress at local bathhouses and at hotsprings or resorts?

They are nude and single sex. Jjim jil bangs have separate bathing areas and coed "steam rooms" where people where "pajamas."
