Was giving the interchange 2 book lesson about national holidays, and in the course of listing such things as chusok, thanksgiving day, halloween, new years, valentines day, easter, buddah's birthday. etc I tried to make comparisons between western national days and Korean national days.
I know Thanksgiving is often compared to Chusok, and I'm wondering if July the 4th could be compared to independence day in Korea. Is that a correct assumption.
Why is thansgiving similar to Chusok? |

Well, actually, Chusok is more a day to honor ancestors, which in a REALLY vague way resembles American Thanksgiving, when we kind of sort of honor our "pilgrim fathers" and mothers, too, since they probably did all of the cooking! It's not actually a "Harvest Festival," but to make it more "westernized", Koreans (in the past 3 or 4 years) have started calling it that. But yeah, Independance Day is the day that a country broke the bonds with the dominant country. |
