Hey Hey,
I just spent my Satuday computer shopping in Yongson and was wondering what people think of the deal I made. I'm pretty stoked on it.

Finally, does anybody know anything about overclocking the p4 2.4c? is it possible with an asus motherboard or should I just not bother?

The deal sounds ok, but without actual model numbers of everything, who really knows. It's probably fine for light gaming and internet, etc...

As far as overclocking, the P2.4 is a good chip, but unless you really know what you are doing, you shouldn't do it. For a good overclock, you need to know about RAM timings, speed ratios (if the RAM isn't stable), voltages, aftermarket heatsinks (the P4 isn't bad, depending on wwhat speed you want to hit) and thoroughly understand all of the BIOS settings.

It's not hard to learn about, but invest the time to do it before you fry your new computer.

I would say that with the graphics card you have, the 2.4 is an ok match....anything more (CPU speed-wise) is redundant, as the ATI card is already the bottleneck in the system. Overclocking the CPU will be a waste, as the graphics card is the limiter on benefits for gaming, which is really the only reason to overclock. Getting a few extra FPS can make or break some resolutions, but for eveyday applications, unless you reach 3.0GHz or over, you won't notice a big difference. The 2.4 will hit 3.0GHz quite easily with the right knowledge behind the overxclocking.

Overclocking the graphics and the CPU can yeild some more positive results, but this will require more care, as the ATI stock heatsinks are poor. I have the Zalman fanless water-pipe heatsink and I can run my 9800XT pretty fast. With the stock heatsink, it was unable to do any overclock at all.

If you want to game, get at least the ATI 9600XT Extreme Edition. Stay away from the 9600 Pro, as it's a slower card and not much cheaper than the 9600XT.

Just though I'd mention, its worth it turning off your onboard sound card in BIOS and getting a nice sound card. Sound cards are not expensive. I have a the top of the line 24 bit Audigy sound card. It is AWESOME, I mean just incredible. With DVD movies, if you listen with a headset, it really sounds something similar to surround sound, i.e. someone walking behind you etc. Apparently this card can do surround sound but I don't know if you truly get the effect with just a headset or not. In anycase, the other thing that is really cool is that Internet phone, unlike the old days, really works very well. Dialpad.com is only about 3 cents a minute. With my old sound card, it was terrible, even witha 2,0 gHz CPU and 756 meg of RAM. With the 24 bit card it almost always telephone quality.

Hope it's not a 9600 Pro video card. Major freeze-up problems with those... the regular 9600 didn't have the same issues. Hundreds of users had this problem (including me) and ATI wouldn't address the issue. I took mine back.

Your CPU is an older Northwood, and not a newer egg-frying Prescott. The Prescotts run too hot already, and rumor is that they aren't as easy to overclock without some serious cooling options. You will have more luck overclocking it if you choose to do that some day. Be sure you know what you are doing when you do.

To be honest, I'd avoid the OC unless you want to enter it as a hobby for fun.
